Nicole Kennedy

Nicole Kennedy

Nicole Kennedy moved to New York City from Connecticutt in 1977 to attend Parson's School of Design while living in SoHo. Eventually she ended up pursuing a career on Madison Avenue, becoming an associate creative director at several ad agencies and creating TV commercials for consumer giants such as Procter & Gamble, Texaco, Minolta, Johnson & Johnson and other pharmaceutical companies. Essentially she sketched storyboards with a writer and presented the ideas to clients. On approval a director would be hired to film the commercials in NY, LA or even Ireland. Creating storyboards for the television medium became a launching pad for Nicole's paintings. When she wasn't working in film production, Nicole enjoyed painting watercolors, which she displayed and sold out of her family's NYC restaurant, Beach Café on 70th and Second Ave. In 1996 her husband (Parker Kennedy) had the crazy idea of moving to his hometown and opening an Italian restaurant. Nicole and Parker pulled up roots and opened Caffé Luna in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1996. Nicole has been painting full time ever since. By nature, Nicole is drawn to drama and has honed a lifelong habit of eavesdropping and "innocent" voyeurism. If you have ever seen her Italian scenes (especially in Caffé Luna) over the years, and most recently her exploration of "Beach People" (for which she is grateful to have received a fair amount of publicity), the storytelling and voyeurism becomes most evident. Being part Italian, Nicole is naturally drawn to Italian people and culture (food, wine, cafés!). In fact, she confesses that she feels a need to relive and recreate moments in Italy. These ongoing oils bring to reality the enduring beauty and intrigue of places like Portofino, Venice, Tuscany, Florence, Lake Como, Bellagio, Rome, etc. Nicole is a multi-tasker by nature, and enjoys painting in both oils and acrylics. She paints with brushes and palette knives, and uses a variety of painting surfaces from traditional canvas to panels and masonite. She paints a great deal "en plein aire" (literally out in the open air). In addition to her painting career, Nicole also teaches many workshops in Raleigh, NC, and enjoys taking classes herself from her acclaimed peers. Quotations / Artist Statements: "Learning never ends and the greatest joy is watching art evolve from piece to piece." - Nicole Kennedy
