Micah Mullen

Micah Mullen

Micah Mullen learned to paint by being immersed in art for most of his life. His father taught art at the college level for over three decades and continues to pursue his passion in his retirement. Micah received a Bachelor's degree from SUNY Brockport and later a Master's degree from Duquesne University. Through six years of higher education, he studied a variety of subjects, but as fate would have it he entered the workforce selling art supplies. In 1996, Micah and his soon to be wife Eileen moved to Raleigh, NC and he began working at Jerry's Artarama. Initially he worked on creating catalogs and advertisements, watching the company grow by leaps and bounds. He quickly began wearing different hats, and quickly grew into the position of Marketing Director. Throughout his life's journey, both in his father's studio and in his professional career at Jerry's Artarama, Micah has learned countless things about art theories, techniques, principles and practices. His never-ending pursuit is putting those ideas onto canvas. Quotations / Artist Statements: "I love Art in all of its forms. Painting has opened up a whole new world and helps me to see things that might have always been there, but I just never bothered to look at them." "My paintings are centered on conceptualization evolving over time. For that reason it is important for me to devote equal or more time to each painting I do. Although my skills as an artist increase with each work, my creativity is also expanding. Therefore I must concentrate on painting longer so to accommodate for new ideas." "My style of painting involves creating a complicated background of hundreds of grids of varying colors. When done the background will loosely look the intended composition, From there I concentrate on adding detail to segments of the painting. This method allows me the most expression because different parts are all done at different times. For example a typical landscape composition might have twenty different trees. Painting all the trees during the same session will tend to create too many similarities and thus a boring composition. Patience and time allows my paintings to reflect my varying emotions and moods and in a strange way create a sense of balance and harmony in what are sometimes very detailed and confusing compositions." - Micah Mullen
