James Sulkowski

James Sulkowski

James N. Sulkowski was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1951. He studied for two years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Carnegie Mellon University and most notably at The Art Students League of New York with Robert Beverly Hale and master painter Frank Mason. It was during his five years of study with Mr. Mason that Sulkowski learned the concepts of the great masters. James Sulkowski's work combines philosophy and science along with his art. His subject matter is nature. He attempts to reveal the universal and the beautiful elements found in the world around us. Sulkowski uses his knowledge of science in preparing all of his own materials by hand. He grinds his own paints from powdered pigments in oils and varnishes which he painstakingly prepares. He also consults Renaissance formulas making his own gessoed panels and lead-ground canvases. This emphasis on the craft of painting is essential to Sulkowski's art. Only in this way is the artist able to control the consistency and vitality of his medium. These methods of the Masters also contribute to a work of art with lasting value and permanence and one that is timeless. In 1979, Mr. Sulkowski, in collaboration with his twin brother, Joseph, was commissioned by the Saudi Arabian government to paint two murals, five feet by twelve feet, commemorating and depicting two important historic highlights of Saudi history. One, the Scientific and Mathematical Achievements of the Saudi Arabians, and two, the Ikhwan Revolt of 1929. These large canvases were completed in 1980 and hang in the King Abdul Aziz Naval Museum in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Sulkowski maintains his studio in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh). He is a member of the National Arts Club, The National Society of Mural Painters and the American Artists Professional League among others. Sulkowski has won many awards in national exhibitions including the Helen DeCozen Award for best floral painting in the American Artists Professional League 64th Grand National. He is also included in "The Best of Flower Painting" published by North Light Books. Quotations / Artist Statements: "I've always admired his work. He's considered to be an outstanding artist and also a terrific teacher." - M. Stephen Doherty,Editor of American Artist Magazine "James Sulkowski has established an enviable reputation for art of the highest quality." - ARTSPEAK Magazine,NYC
