Georges Le Chevallier
Georges Le Chevallier had his first major solo exhibition almost twenty years ago, and since then his paintings and public art installations have been exhibited extensively in distinguished galleries and museums throughout the United States, as well as in Japan, France, Spain, Puerto Rico, Chile, Canada, and Hungary. Le Chevallier, son of a French father and Puerto Rican mother, was born in Paris, France and grew up in Puerto Rico. His family moved to Los Angeles, California when he was a teenager, and he has since lived in Madrid, Spain, and New York City, where he received his MFA in painting at Hunter College. He is currently a Design Professor at The School of Communication Arts in Raleigh, North Carolina. The influences of the various societies and languages Le Chevallier has encountered have all found their way into his artwork. His work - including large murals, paintings, prints, and photographs - tells his multi-cultural story by layering contrasting imagery and information. His paintings combine paint, found objects and text that winds its way across the canvases, bordering maps, photographs, and other artifacts that allude to people and places that have some meaning to the artist. Consequently, viewing his paintings feels like reading a journal or scrapbook. The various artistic influences, bright colors, unusual textures, and seemingly disconnected imagery of his paintings also reflect the technical mass media over-stimulation of modern culture that we all have become accustomed to. Quotations / Artist Statements: "Le Chevallier has a wealth of knowledge and experience in his particular subject area which he brings to his classes. He is also able to develop excellent rapport with his students. He is one of our most popular instructors." - Debra Ann Hooper Director of the School of Communication Arts, Raleigh, NC May 2006
