The reason is that universal primed surfaces are semi-absorbent. Gesso is absorbent even if it is plate smooth. The paint does not get absorbed as much and sits on the surface more making it easy to blend and manipulate. Granted, it is not highly absorbent, but the fact remains that some oil will get into the primer and flatten the image. You can get around this by using an under-painting oil ground on top of the surface of a universal ground canvas, but this is very time-consuming and expensive. Our primer does not contain zinc or lead. The main ingredients used in the coating of these panels are acrylic emulsion, titanium pigment, calcium carbonate, and alkyd resin. Unlike universal ground, our oil priming chemically bonds with the oil paint and is non-absorbent allowing the paint to sit up on the surface with the correct refraction quality of the oil binder. The linen is hand washed and pumiced to a lovely even surface, then coated with a layer of glue sizing and three coats of archival, non-yellowing, off-white oil primer, and is hand-sanded between coats for ideal adhesion. This oil primer is specially formulated to produce beautiful results with oil paints: as it is non-absorbent, the oils in the paint are allowed to sit up on the surface, making for luminous, refractive effects only possible with oil paints used on the proper ground. Once primed and dried, the canvas is stretched onto an innovative designed solid pine stretcher bars — instead of the standard tongue-and-groove join of regular stretcher bars, these bars feature slot-lap joins that are far less likely to go out of square. In addition, the 1" deep by 2-1/4" wide stretchers offer more support to the canvas, as the bulk of the size is in the width. Once finished, each canvas is individually inspected and only once inspection is passed is it stamped with the Paris logo on the back of the product.
