What is an oil primed canvas? A canvas primed with oil is a type of canvas that has been treated with an oil based primer or base. This involves adding coats of primer to the linen canvas roll, a blend of linseed oil and pigment. The canvas material is pulled tightly over a stretcher frame, panel or board followed many applications of coats of oil based primer on the surface.

What types of paint work best on oil primed canvas? An oil primed canvas is specially crafted for oil paints making them the ideal choice for use on this type of surface. Oil paints bond effectively with the oil based primer ensuring top notch quality and durability of the artwork. Although oil paints are commonly used on oil primed canvas other mediums like oil pastels or oil sticks can also work well. It's important to note that acrylics or watercolors are not recommended for use on oil primed canvas. Acrylic paints may not adhere properly to the oil primer.
