PastelMat® is a premium card surface (360gsm / 170lb) specially developed for pastelists. Its unique velvety surface, made from a fine coating of cellulose fibers, has the ability to grab and hold multiple layers of even the softest pastels.

PastelMat significantly reduces the need for fixative, which means that colors remain vibrant and fresh once applied. It has the added bonus of being gentle on both fingers and blending tools. It is acid free and lightfast.

PastelMat is ideal for use with all dry media - pastel sticks, PanPastel, pencils and charcoal. It is also water resistant which means that it can be used with wet media – such as acrylics and watercolor for washes and mixed media techniques.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very nice product! Pastelmat is an excellent surface for pastel painting. I love the smooth texture, (especially nice for portraits). I really love the fact that you get very little dust when using this product and it can take many, many layers. It can also accept a liquid underpainting such as watercolor, acrylic, or the method of wetting the pastel itself. No need for a fixative on this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Support! Of the "premium" surfaces for soft pastel available, this is probably my favorite. I've started using the white, 20 x 28" sheets that allow me to cut them to the size I need. I'm mounting them to a piece of Crescent RagMat and using heavy watercolor washes on them. The board might shift a little, but bounces back after a half hour or so of drying. The brightness of the white ground really pops through and allows for a seamless transition to soft pastel work over washes. Bottom Line: This product has allowed my work to achieve a richness in chroma that I probably wouldn't have been able to reach otherwise. I highly recommend it. In addition, the price for the 20x28" 5 packs is unbeatable. Once again, Jerry's, thank you. Your service, selection and prices are why I keep coming back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PastelMat Passes Test PastelMat will take any underpainting medium. No fixitive is needed even with multiple layers of pastel. The card stock backing makes this product easy to mount and frame. If you like to blend your pastels on the surface of the support you will like PastelMat's unique surface that will not erode your fingertips. Once you try it, you will be sold on this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile paper I use PastelMat paper in conjunction with PanPastels and the two work beautifully together. PastelMat paper is versatile and withstands water media as well. I would only suggest that the paper could be sold in all-white pads in addition to the assorted colors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEST, next to Wallis and Sennelier! This paper is unbeatable for value and the ability to hold many layers of pastel. It is not so rough that you damage your fingers on it (if you use them), and color pops on it wonderfully!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome for pastel work As a full-time pastel artist, I have switched almost exclusively to pastelmat. I love it. It doesn't hold quite as many layers as sanded papers like wallis, but it holds much more pastel than you would think. It's a pleasure to work on a smooth surface, and the unique qualities of the surface allow for a wide variety of mark making. I underpaint using alcohol with good success. Just be aware that the surface can be fragile if it becomes very wet. Just let it dry out and it is back to its original durable self.

Is this paper suitable for use with polychromos coloured pencils?  Can it be used with Brush and Pencil product Powder Blender for coloured pencil + Texture Fixative from Brush and Pencil? With Sofft Tools?

This 170 lb (360 gsm) card is also an ideal surface for pencil and charcoal and pastel. The fine particles are sufficiently well-fixed for a smooth surface and comfort of use, and the smoothness of the cork grain in the adhesive ensures longevity. The character "fixing" of this surface is so extraordinary that the positioning of multiple layers of pastels and the realization of flat tints, precise details, or delicate and transparent veils are easily achieved. The use of fixative is not necessary with Pastelmat. The rigidity, weight, and non-acidity, as well as the paper's light-resistance, guarantee the conservation of your artwork. However, it is recommended that a sheet of acid-free translucent paper be placed over finished artworks created on Pastelmat. Pastelmat's are acid-free, archival, lightfast and water-resistant. They are Ideal for use with Soft Pastel, PanPastel ®, Pencil & Charcoal.

In the past, I’ve purchased a couple of large sheets of Stonehenge and then torn it into smaller ones. That seemed more economical. Can that be done with this?

No, this is a thicker card or mat that cannot be torn into sections. You could cut the card by scoring it with an exacto knife and ruler several times until the section that you are scoring separates. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
