What is a Canvas Floater Frame? A floater frame for canvas leaves a space between the edge of the canvas and the start of the frame so that no artwork is covered by the frame. This type of floating frame is usually deeper than a typical frame, which allows the front of the canvas to sit flush with the edge of the frame. Canvas floater frames give canvas paintings a sophisticated look and provide viewers with a sense of three-dimensional depth.
How Do I Choose a Floater Frame?

How Do You Put a Canvas In a Floater Frame?
To put a canvas in a floater frame, you start by gathering the materials you need. Art frames usually come with hardware such as offset clips and screws. You will need a hammer, a screwdriver or drill, and your canvas. Once you have all the supplies, simply follow the following steps:
- Place your canvas face down.
- Place the floater frame around the canvas (also face down) and center the canvas inside the frame.
- If offset clips are pre-installed on the frame, attach each clip to your canvas with screws. If offset clips are not pre-installed, attach one or more clips to each length of the back of the frame and then attach each clip to your canvas with screws
How Do I Measure a Canvas Floater Frame?
To measure a stretched canvas floater frame, you should measure your canvas three times horizontally (top, middle, and bottom) and three times vertically (side, center, and side). These measurements will enable you to know whether the canvas is bowed along any edges.
Next, measure the canvas across its diagonal both ways. This measurement will tell you whether the canvas is square. If for some reason, the canvas is a bit trapezoidal, you’ll want to leave a larger space between the canvas and the frame so it’s less noticeable.
Lastly, measure the depth of your canvas to ensure your floater frame allows your canvas to sit flush with the front of the frame. Having canvas surfaces level with the front of the frame creates a stunning visual.
Depending on how much space you want between your canvas and frame, add double this amount to both the length and width dimensions. For example, if you want a ¼” gap between your canvas and the frame, add ½” to the length and height measurements you took of your canvas to obtain the correct frame size.
