What is Acrylic Gesso?

Acrylic Gesso is the foundation of a painting very similar to white acrylic paint, it dries hard which makes the surface more stiff. Gesso prepares or "primes" the surface for painting. It is a paint like substance that is brushed on a canvas or subtstrate which prepares it for painting. Modern acrylic gesso is a combination of: Acrylic polymer medium (binder), Calcium carbonate (chalk), A pigment (usually Titanium white) and Chemicals that ensure flexibility and long archival life. Gesso is the same as a primer, as in 'pre-primed canvas.'

What's the difference between gesso and primer? Traditional Oil 'glue gesso' was made with an animal glue binder, usually rabbit-skin glue, chalk, and white pigment, usually Titanium white. Gesso is the same as a primer, as in 'pre-primed canvas'. It is made from a combination of paint pigment, chalk and binder.

Do you let acrylic gesso dry before painting? Yes, it is recommended to let acrylic gesso dry completely before painting. The drying time can vary depending on factors such as the thickness of the gesso layer, humidity, and temperature. It is important to ensure that the gesso is fully dry before you begin painting to prevent any issues with the adhesion and durability of the acrylic paint.
