In 1858, Jean-Baptiste Bichelberger founded Clairefontaine in the small town of Etival-Clairefontaine, nestled in France's Vosges valley—an area rich in clear waters, vast forests, and a tradition of papermaking. Using high-quality rags from the local textile industry, Clairefontaine quickly grew into one of the region's most important paper mills and began manufacturing its own notebooks in 1890.
Still family-run and now led by the sixth generation, Clairefontaine continues to honor its roots: crafting paper and notebooks that inspire creativity, celebrate craftsmanship, and carry forward a legacy more than 150 years in the making.
