Surface Preparation Non-absorbent surfaces should be abraded for increased adhesion. Prime with GOLDEN Gesso or other suitable primers (depending on substrate). Apply one or more coats of GOLDEN Pastel Ground to achieve the desired tooth. On paper, use heavier weight stock to avoid buckling. Allow ground to fully dry before applying media. Color Additions Pastel Ground can be blended with GOLDEN Acrylic Paints to achieve colored grounds. However, add minimal amounts of color since all additions of paint to Ground will decrease the tooth. GOLDEN High Flow Acrylics and Fluid Acrylics blend easily into the ground without thickening the product. High Load Acrylics have the highest pigment load and therefore provide the most color in the least amount of paint. Unless transparency is desired, select paints that are inherently opaque, such as the Pyrroles or earth colors. This will allow lower additions as well. The effect is best seen in thin films over a light color. Heavy Gel (Gloss, Matte, or Semi-Gloss): is a thick gel that may be blended with acrylic colors to increase paint viscosity. Heavy Gels are excellent for holding peaks and dry translucent. The body of the gel will remain flexible even with thick impasto work. High Solid Gel (Gloss or Matte): are similar in body to Heavy Gels. They contain more acrylic solids and shrink slightly less than other gels. They blend well with colors and will retain brush strokes upon drying. Available in gloss and matte. Pumice Gel: Available in fine, coarse, and extra coarse texture. The textured gel dries to a hard film. They mix well with GOLDEN Acrylic Colors. Coarse Pumice Gel creates more coarse textures to yield concrete-like finishes. Regular Gel (Gloss, Matte, or Semi-Gloss): Regular Gel is ideal for extending paint and regulating transparency without changing consistency. Useful for impasto effects and holding moderate peaks of texture. They blend well with colors and will retain brush strokes upon drying. Soft Gel (Gloss, Matte, or Semi-Gloss):Thinner than GOLDEN Heavy Body Acrylic colors, Soft Gels are moderately pourable. Hold only slight peaks. The recommended acrylic to function as a glue for collaging.
