The term “cold” in Cold Wax Medium and Cold Wax Painting refers to the fact that heat is not required for working with this wax medium – as it dries by solvent evaporation (Gamsol), rather than the cooling of the wax, as in encaustic painting. As the Gamsol evaporates out of the medium, the soft wax hardens to the density of a beeswax candle. Unlike other Gamblin painting mediums, which increase the flow and gloss of oil colors to varying degrees, Cold Wax Medium makes oil colors thicker and more matte. It has a “short” characteristic and gives a clean break off of the brush or knife, retaining the sharp peaks of impasto. These working properties allow for expressive brushmarks and the ability to carve into paint layers with palette knives. Cold Wax also gives oil colors a beautiful translucent quality, similar to the seductive surfaces of encaustic paintings. * Cold Wax - Made from natural white unbleached beeswax.* Mix directly into colors* Cold Wax creates an ultra-thick, matte impasto* For greater shine and flexibility mix with Galkyd medium* Excellent in creating a variety of textures within a painting What is Cold Wax Painting? Cold Wax Painting is any type of painting that heavily utilizes Cold Wax Medium into oil colors. In its own way, Cold Wax Painting blurs the line between oil painting and encaustic painting. Cold Wax Painting It’s a rare occurrence for one specific painting medium to have a whole genre of painting associated with it, but Cold Wax Medium is one such medium. Cold Wax Painting is not defined by subject matter nor the degree of realism or abstraction, Cold Wax Painting is unified by artists’ shared interest in experimentation, texture and the physicality of paint layers. Centurion Deluxe Oil Primed 10"x10" Linen Canvas .67" Deep (Box of 6)Save Up to64%Off listWhite Master Quality Archival Deluxe Stretched Canvas! Superb Performance And Color Retention! Exclusive OP Enhanced Oil Priming! As an oil painter, it is important to work on oil primed surfaces. First, oil on oil will provide the best chemical bond for the paint layers that go on, afterwards. Secondly, gesso are acrylic based, and either repel oil if they have too high of a resin base, or absorb the oil too much if it is too matte, making color sink and look dull and lifeless. Oil priming allows the color to sit cleanly and brightly on the surface, with refraction of the white from below. Centurion’s affordable (OP DLX) oil primed canvas is a great way to start painting with not only an oil primer, but the luxurious texture and archival tradition of linen! Exclusive OP enhanced oil priming! Centurion Deluxe Oil Primed 10"x10" Linen Panel, 3 PackSave Up to84%Off listWhite Master Quality Archival Deluxe Linen Panels! Superb performance and color retention! Exclusive OP enhanced oil priming As an oil colorist it is important to work on oil primed surfaces and not universal primed surfaces. The reason is that universal primed surfaces are semi-absorbent. Gesso is absorbent even if it is plate smooth. The paint does not get absorbed as much and sits on the surface more making it easy to blend and manipulate. Granted it is not highly absorbent but the fact remains that some oil will get into the primer and flatten the image. You can get around this by using an under-painting oil ground on top of the surface of a universal ground canvas but this is very time consuming and expensive. Unlike universal ground, our oil priming chemically bonds with the oil paint and is non-absorbent allowing the paint to sit up on the surface with the correct refraction quality of the oil binder. If you use any high-quality oil color we urge you to use an oil primed surface and now we make it affordable! Exclusive OP Enhanced Oil Priming! Centurion Deluxe Professional Oil Primed Linen Panels, specifically designed for oil painters. Superb receptive surface accepts even the thinnest oil color lay down without fragmenting on the surface and is a permanent surface as colors adhere better on it than any other oil primed canvas on the market today!
