The reason is that universal primed surfaces are semi-absorbent. Gesso is absorbent even if it is plate smooth. The paint does not get absorbed as much and sits on the surface more making it easy to blend and manipulate. Granted, it is not highly absorbent, but the fact remains that some oil will get into the primer and flatten the image. You can get around this by using an under-painting oil ground on top of the surface of a universal ground canvas, but this is very time-consuming and expensive. Our primer does not contain zinc or lead. The main ingredients used in the coating of these panels are acrylic emulsion, titanium pigment, calcium carbonate, and alkyd resin. Unlike universal ground, our oil priming chemically bonds with the oil paint and is non-absorbent allowing the paint to sit up on the surface with the correct refraction quality of the oil binder. Chamois skin is very soft and naturally absorbent, with no abrasive properties that will damage even delicate papers. The chamois can be cut into small manageable pieces and carefully used to blend cleanly and softly, instead of smudging with fingers, which can introduce finger oils to the surface and discolor the drawing. Used primarily as a blending and erasing tool with gentle wiping or rubbing, the artist can blot the excess surface, pull up dust, or even lighten the drawing with precisely controlled blotting. Once the chamois surface has been completely used, it can be either soaked in warm, soapy water and hand-washed, or run through the washing machine with detergent (but no softener) and then hung in a safe place to dry.
