Rated 5 out of 5 by from blackest blacks Just finished a drawing of zebras drinking. Wolf's Carbon pencils made possible the pleasure of getting absolute black against absolute white with sharp lines and no smudges. By using the selection of only four types, 6B, 4B, 2B and B, I was able to achieve any selection on the gray scale that I needed from the lightest greys to the absolute black. I love these pencils! They blend beautifully and smoothly with a stomp.This is the fourth set I am ordering. If you like to draw with graphite, but want your darks to be richer, darker and more poignant, buy a set and put them to work. You will love the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than charcoal These are easier and less smudgy than charcoal pencils and are blacker than graphite pencils. I use them for figure drawings and caricatures. They are fairly erasable and last as long as charcoal if not longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My absolute favorite black pencil I use these largely for sketching from life. They are absolutely smooth, velvety, yet it's possible to get nice, fine, precise points on them and create very delicate lines when needed. They feel delightful in motion on the paper. They combine well with other media because they don't have any slick graphite or wax in them. I often use them for delicate animal eyes and noses in portraits which are otherwise done entirely in pastel. The Wolff's pencils blend seamlessly. You can also create nice washes using a brush and water over hatched areas. Only drawback is that, as with all carbon, charcoal & Conté pencils, you really have to sharpen these with a blade, by hand, to keep the lead from breaking. If there's a sharpener that will work on these kinds of pencils, I haven't found it yet. Not a significant complaint for me, though, just the nature of the materials.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best I've ever found I've tried several brands of charcoal pencil and a couple other carbon pencils, and these give me the most control, the most joy to use. I sketch with these on their own, or use them in combination with other pencils and even pastels. They give me a precisely controlled, velvety black -- or a loose, smooth, delicate gray sketched line, if that's what I want. Oh, and I can take a wet brush and create washes with them, too. The only down side is that, as with every other charcoal/carbon/conté type pencil I've used, these can't be sharpened with a pencil sharpener. You have to sharpen by hand with a blade or the lead will break. Not a problem for me as I'm used to doing that, but just an FYI for those unfamiliar with these kinds of pencils.
