Metallic Powder for True Metal Effects in Oil Painting

Schmincke Oil Bronzes are specialty metallic effect powders made with real metal pigments that are mixed with a bronzing medium to create brilliant, reflective finishes in oil painting and mixed-media work. Unlike standard “metallic paints,” Oil Bronzes produce a true light-catching surface that looks and behaves like real metal.

Oil Bronze dries to a smudge-proof, waterproof metallic finish on primed wood, metal, and gypsum. Dried paint can be removed with turpentine or solvent if necessary.

Schmincke Oil Bronzes are formulated with genuine metal pigments, allowing artists to create authentic shimmering finishes rather than simulated metallic color. They are designed to produce an iridescent, reflective metal effect on oil paintings and other prepared surfaces. Authentic Metallic Shine – Formulated with genuine metal powders for a true gold, copper, or silver effect—not simulated color.

Oil Bronzes can be used not only on oil paintings but also on primed supports such as wood, metal, or plaster/gypsum, expanding their usefulness beyond canvas. They adhere well to these prepared surfaces and can also be applied to absorbent grounds when pre-treated appropriately. It is highly lightfast and available in five different, brilliant metallic colors.

How Schmincke Oil Bronzes Work, Mix with Bronze Medium

For oil painting, Schmincke Bronze Powder is mixed with a special binder called Bronze Medium (often referred to as Schmincke Bronze Medium or Bronzing Medium). It is the recommended binder that suspends the metal powder and allows it to be applied like paint.

Mix the bronze powder with Schmincke Bronze Medium. Start with approximately 3 parts bronze powder to 2 parts bronze medium.
Adjust the ratio to control coverage or transparency.
Apply like paint to create metallic accents, layers, or finishes.
Allow to dry to a durable, reflective surface.
This system gives artists far more control than pre-mixed metallic paints.
Thicker mix → more coverage and stronger metallic effect. Thinner mix → smoother application and subtle shimmer/glaze.
Allow to dry fully before varnishing (if desired).
