Unprimed & Hardboard Wood Art Panels
Jerry's carries only best artist quality unprimed hardboard wood painting panels. Our curated selection of the finest panels offer artists a durable and affordable alternative to canvas. Made from compressed wood fibers, these panels provide a smooth, rigid surface ideal for detailed work. Because they’re unprimed, they require sealing and priming before use—especially for oil painting—to ensure longevity and proper paint adhesion. With the right preparation, they become a versatile and archival-quality surface for both oil and acrylic artists.

Hardboard Wood Panel - Hardboard (also known as Masonite) is a type of engineered wood made from compressed wood fibers. It’s smooth, dense, and sturdy, making it a popular surface for painting. Unlike canvas, it doesn’t flex or sag, which gives your painting a more rigid support — great for detailed work or when you want to avoid cracking. You get full control over the texture and absorbency.
Unprimed - This just means the panel hasn't been coated with gesso or any primer. In its raw state, hardboard is very absorbent and needs to be sealed before painting, especially if you're using oil paints — otherwise, the oils can soak in and cause deterioration over time. You can seal it yourself with something like Gamblin PVA size and then apply gesso or Gamblin Ground for a proper painting surface.
