The perfect easel for plein aire painting!

The Beauport Easel is an improved version of the famous Gloucester and Andersen Easels, which were first introduced in the early part of the 20th century. Thanks to its special design, the Beauport allows you to paint large-size canvases outdoors, even in windy conditions. The key is the extra wide foot print of the easel, which spans 65" across and 65" from front to back. We would suggest attaching a sand bag for extra windy conditions, but you can usually fill an empty bag with sand or dirt after you set up the easel, so there's no need to carry a heavy bag into the field with you.

Key Features:
  • Weighs just 14lbs!
  • Made of seasoned hardwood
  • Holds canvases up to 48" h × 60" wide!
  • Accommodates canvases as small as 4×6"
  • Supports a sketch box, palette and roll of paper towels (not included)
  • Includes carrying bag with extra room to store other gear
  • Includes carry strap for filed use
  • Folds to 46" × 3.5" × 5" and sets up in less than a minute
  • Includes a forward tilt, helping reduce glare and allowing for easy pastel painting
  • Removable wooden pegs to set the canvas height
  • An additional 18" extender leg allows an even greater variance of leg heights
  • Money back satisfaction guarantee
Perfect For:
  • Accommodating uneven slopes in the terrain
  • Wide stance allows use in windy conditions
  • May be used in conjunction with a Soleil Traverse Umbrella
  • Wide range of painting angles
  • Quick leg adjustment to compensate for slope of terrain
  • An amazing quality easel for the price!

Finally there is an easel sturdy enough to let you paint large on any terrain, even in windy conditions

  • May be used in conjunction with a Soleil Traverse Umbrella
  • Wide range of painting angles
  • Quick leg adjustment to compensate for slope of terrain
  • An amazing quality easel for the price!

The Beauport Easel's unique design allows for a wide range of painting angles. In fact, the angle range even includes a forward tilt, helping reduce glare and allowing for easy pastel painting. The Beauport's height adjustment system uses a unique internal spring mechanism activated with just the pull of a lever. This allows you to set each leg at the ideal height, compensating for the slope of the terrain. Plus, you can easily adjust the height of the easel for sitting or standing, so you can paint with comfort every time.

The Beauport Easel features a convenient hooked rod to secure your canvas at the top. Since this rod has minimal exposure to the front of the canvas, you can paint to the top edges more easily then with many other easels. In addition, the Beauport uses removable wooden pegs to set the canvas height, which allows you to paint to the very edges of the canvas. An additional 18" extender leg allows an even greater variance of leg heights, accommodating uneven slopes in the terrain.

While you're painting, there is plenty of support up front for a palette and paper towels, plus rear storage of a sketch box filled with supplies. Finally there is an easel sturdy enough to let you paint large on any terrain, even in windy conditions. We're so convinced that you'll love the Beauport Easel, we sell it with a money back satisfaction guarantee!

Artist Endorsed!

"I just love the Beauport Easel. It's lightweight, very easy to assemble, and it holds a 48x60 canvas with ease. Even in the wind it stands strong. I'm doing my best outdoor work on it. I'll say it again, I love it."- George Gallo, Professional Artist and Producer

Beauport Large Format Outdoor Easel is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly constructed Awful, would not purchase. Spring mechanism in the legs broke on first use, so I was left with an unusable and unreturnable easel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My third Beauport, they are a great easel for the price This is my third Beauport, and I continue to buy them for several reasons. The overall quality of the wood, and leg extensions are good. The hardware (little screws, nuts and bolts, etc) all need to be replaced eventually, even the metal piece that holds the cross bar in place. I replace all the nuts with lock nuts, and use stronger wood screws etc. Look, any easel I have ever had has problems, and there is no perfect easel out there, so minor hardware switch out's are expected. The pro's of the beauport are: #1 it's height. I am 6'1" and it's a good height for me. Canvas and shelf height. I slouch over when I paint on my frence easel, but I don't on the beauport #2 It's sturdy. It really is good in the wind. I've never had it blow over. It's super sturdy #3 It can acommodate a larger palette. I built my own palette box, 18"x22", to accomodate the 200 ml tubes of lucas oils that I use. I can fit big tubes of paint in there, and also a large palette. The large palette makes painting more fun. I've been out with friends who use an easyl pochade on the shelf, for mixing etc. The cons #1 it will warp in the rain. And then it is harder to use. It will also swell. Basically, I'd stay out of the rain with this easel. #2. The stick can be too large. It won't fit in the tobin holes at the top of the easel. Just sand it down a bit, and apply some parafin wax to it, and you will be fine. #3. you need a shade for your palette, even when backlit. This is no problem, as you probably already have a good umbrella. Anyway, it's sturdy, and easy to use. It's my choice for large outdoor work, and like most things in art simple is better. I hope this helps.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product but needs a few fixes to make it work like the original it is copied from This is a great easel after I tweaked it a bit. Don't get me wrong, you can use it right out of the box, but the tweaks (there are some online), will make it even better. Plus, it is much less expensive than the alternative: Take-it Easel. This easel gives you the most stable and largest working area (think large palette and larger paintings if desired). And if you have an umbrella attached, you'll never have to worry about blow-overs. I especially love the large area for palette and paint box. I've spent a couple of weeks tweaking this to make it work better and I couldn't be happier. Especially the part where the two cross bars come down to the front. I was able to view a video for the far more expensive Take-it Easel and find out that these two cross bars are attached upside-down if you want it to be like the original (the hardware seems to be upside-down), and one of the metal loops is in the wrong place if you want it like the original Gloucester easel. It will still work without the tweaks, but if you can, I would recommend some tweaking. The crossbars should be held up by a hook which I screwed into the top area of the back leg (when the easel is in the folded position). Anyway, I recommend searching for Beauport Easel hacks or tweaks and you'll find out how to make this better—there are several other artists who have posted tweaks. I'll add some photos later here for clarification, if possible. I also plan to publish a post which will detail how to get the best out of this easel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good This has it all for location painting. I have other plein air easels, but I always go back to this one. It is portable & can give me the use of a studio piece. I like that it holds my box, bucket, rags, etc. It is not as heavy as the metal tripod types that screw into the paint boxes. I am very pleased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beauport Easel Very Useful Outdoors. I like the V shaped support area for my paint box and the expansion options. Very sturdy and sets up pretty quickly. Its large and takes up alot of space so storage is an issue. Adjustability is OK, takes some getting used to. Good price/value combination.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Potentially great This Glouscester-style easel handles situations other easels won't, but requires some modifications. If you paint in windy or salty conditions this is probably the best easel you can find. Also, you won't need to carry anything else because it has a built in shelf. The wooden legs don't have the same problems with sand and salt air that aluminum or steel does. Here are the problems: First, the directions are abysmal - it comes with parts I still haven't found a use for. Second, out of the box, one leg wouldn't extend - turns out is was caught on a staple that had been placed at the top of the leg so that the mechanism wouldn't be stored in a tense position. Third and most importantly, the horizontal shelf created by the cross bars is NOT stable in the wind. Here's how I fixed it: 1. I drilled a hole in the back leg at the height of the crossbars and put a dowel in there, then wrapped a cord around the crossbars and dowel to make sure it would hold together. 2. I drilled holes near the bottom of the legs so that I can use ropes to stake them to the ground. It will now handle pretty much anything.
