Portability is so important as it allows artists to capture the moment by first sketching with black or sepia ink and then coloring or by traditional painting techniques. Until now artists could use a watercolor half pan but they were fairly large and carrying water into the field was cumbersome. In addition artists had to memorize what each color look liked before they painted with them since pans are concentrated and transparent. So for most of the later part of the 20th century markers were used. However ever since airplane flight markers often leaked and the colors did not match their artist colors. The water brush came along in the later part of the 20th century but it is only recently been widely accepted. Fan Pan has seven integrated concentrated paint slats that fit into each other and are easily fanned out so an artist can hold a complete set of colors in one hand! Color indicator strips at end of each slat show you what the colors look like on paper taking the guesswork out of color selection.
