Mount Vision utilizes both traditional and synthetic pigments, which make great substitutes for traditional painting pigments that are health hazards to use in pastels (such as cadmiums, cobalts, etc.) Mount Vision's manufacturing process is simple and straightforward, creating a truly handmade product with great love and care by dedicated craftsmen. First, the pigments and chalks(or other binder) are weighed out on a scale, and then placed in an industrial sized mixing bowl. The mixture is fully mixed to the consistency of cookie dough, and then put through a sausage stuffer, where it is extruded onto wood boards. The boards are placed outside to dry the long pastel lines a little, to firm them slightly before handling. Once ready, the pastel lines are cut to size and then carefully rolled by hand to create a more uniform shape. The finished pastels are then placed on a drying rack to cure before hand labeling. With the advances in the manufacture of synthetic pigments I feel that there are alternatives available for use that will serve the artist as well without the possible side effects. That said probably the biggest concern for pastelists is the pigment dust created by them. Whenever possible it is better to clean dust with a wet rag, sponge, or paper towel than to sweep it up (which causes more dust). Unison Soft Pastels, developed by British artist John Hersey, began in the early ‘80s when he could not find the working qualities he was looking for in the factory made pastels that were on the market. Hersey was disappointed that the mass-produced pastels broke too easily, were not consistent in texture, and didn’t suit his color vision as a painter. For several years he worked on handmade methods of production, the texture of his pigments in mixtures, and creating sensible color sequences. Once he finally felt satisfied and presented his pastels publicly, they were met with immediate enthusiasm! The pastels are created with superior-quality pigments in an 8 stage process, by a small staff of skilled artisans. Following a unique recipe for each custom created by John Hersey, all the dry pigments for the specific color being made are added to a bowl. Some specific recipes can call for up to 7 pigments! Pigments are then mixed carefully and binder is added where needed for the particular color’s properties— sometimes none is required. The mixture is thoroughly mixed to a thick consistency, and then spooned out in equal proportions onto sheets of blotting paper, resting until they are dry enough to handle. Drying time at this step can vary depending on pigment, and can take from a few minutes up to 24 hours. The spooned out portions are them squeezed to release excess water, to prepare them for rolling. Each portion is then carefully rolled into the pastel shape by hand, to give a unique texture that will help provide a consistent response. After drying slightly longer on the blotting paper, the rolled pastels are then cut exactly to size with a handmade cutting tool. After cutting, the pastels are gently placed on wire trays and dried overnight in a very gentle heat. They are then taken and stored in the packing room, to await hand-labeling. The handmade nature and precise, careful development and care of Unison Pastels make them ideally fashioned for the discerning artist. Unison’s complete range features 288 colors, utilizing many single and pure pigments, along with John Hersey's selective pigment blends. Unison Soft Pastels, developed by British artist John Hersey, began in the early ‘80s when he could not find the working qualities he was looking for in the factory made pastels that were on the market. Hersey was disappointed that the mass-produced pastels broke too easily, were not consistent in texture, and didn’t suit his color vision as a painter. For several years he worked on handmade methods of production, the texture of his pigments in mixtures, and creating sensible color sequences. Once he finally felt satisfied and presented his pastels publicly, they were met with immediate enthusiasm! The pastels are created with superior-quality pigments in an 8 stage process, by a small staff of skilled artisans. Following a unique recipe for each custom created by John Hersey, all the dry pigments for the specific color being made are added to a bowl. Some specific recipes can call for up to 7 pigments! Pigments are then mixed carefully and binder is added where needed for the particular color’s properties— sometimes none is required. The mixture is thoroughly mixed to a thick consistency, and then spooned out in equal proportions onto sheets of blotting paper, resting until they are dry enough to handle. Drying time at this step can vary depending on pigment, and can take from a few minutes up to 24 hours. The spooned out portions are them squeezed to release excess water, to prepare them for rolling. Each portion is then carefully rolled into the pastel shape by hand, to give a unique texture that will help provide a consistent response. After drying slightly longer on the blotting paper, the rolled pastels are then cut exactly to size with a handmade cutting tool. After cutting, the pastels are gently placed on wire trays and dried overnight in a very gentle heat. They are then taken and stored in the packing room, to await hand-labeling. The handmade nature and precise, careful development and care of Unison Pastels make them ideally fashioned for the discerning artist. Unison’s complete range features 288 colors, utilizing many single and pure pigments, along with John Hersey's selective pigment blends. Unison Soft pastels are rolled without the use of extrusion, compression or heating, these pastels offer fluid lay-down of color with consistent creaminess and reliable softness. These lightfast, water-soluble pastels are available in multiple, carefully selected sets, neatly packaged with protective foam inserts. Thin 20-40% with water to desired consistency. Application Apply with brush, paint-roller, spray equipment, squeegee or palette knife. Mix up only as much as is needed for one day"s work, as the solids will settle rapidly and be extremely difficult to mix back into suspension. Surface Preparation Non-absorbent surfaces should be abraded for increased adhesion. Prime with GOLDEN Gesso or other suitable primers (depending on substrate). Apply one or more coats of GOLDEN Pastel Ground to achieve the desired tooth. On paper, use heavier weight stock to avoid buckling. Allow ground to fully dry before applying media. Color Additions Pastel Ground can be blended with GOLDEN Acrylic Paints to achieve colored grounds. However, add minimal amounts of color since all additions of paint to Ground will decrease the tooth. GOLDEN High Flow Acrylics and Fluid Acrylics blend easily into the ground without thickening the product. High Load Acrylics have the highest pigment load and therefore provide the most color in the least amount of paint. Unless transparency is desired, select paints that are inherently opaque, such as the Pyrroles or earth colors. This will allow lower additions as well. Airbrushing thin layers of color after the ground has dried will give the strongest saturation of color to the ground without affecting the gritty surface. See More
