You can quickly clean the blade with soap and water or wipe clean with solvents. If acrylic paint dries on the blade, you can peel it right off. Applying layers of colors in multiple ways: Here is where your creativity takes over. You can add colors with a basic spread of paint or use the edge to add linear shapes and layer color.
