I've used all of those latter paints quite a bit, but casein has qualities all its own. It can be used transparently, but it has great opacity when you need it, something often lacking in acrylic. It's one of the oldest paint mediums, dating all the way back to the Egyptians – JAMES GURNEY" What is Casein? Casein (kay'seen) is a quick-drying, aqueous medium using a milk-based binding agent, and is one of the most durable mediums known to man. Nine thousand year old casein cave paintings have been discovered in Asia. Later, the medium was used by Byzantine, Roman and Renaissance artists, including the Old Masters. Known for their versatility and array of capabilities, casein paints can be used to create a variety of effects from the rich opaques of oil to thin watercolor washes. Because casein has an exceptional integrity of color and always dries to a perfect matte finish, it is unexcelled for art reproduction. The velvety matte finish can also be buffed to a satin sheen or varnished to produce a resemblance to oils. Over time, casein pigments become resistant to moisture and as history has proven, the medium has a durability and permanence which has easily stood the test of time. Because it dries quickly, it is possible to lay down a glaze and move onto the next stage within a few hours instead of waiting for days, or even months, as with oils. Can I mix casein with other mediums? Yes you can! Use casein over watercolor or gouache or as an underpainting for acrylic, pastel or oils. If using casein under oils, apply a barrier layer of Damar varnish over the casein before the oil paint. Casein can also be used under oils as an excellent underpainting medium. See More

M. Graham Oil Color 5oz - Permanent Green LightSave Up to40%Off listGreen M. Graham Oils - The only oil paint with Walnut Oil In the tradition of the masters, M. Graham artists’ oil paint is made with pure walnut oil for its brilliance, clarity, texture, and resistance to fading and yellowing. Working in small batches, we craft oil colors true to the roots of Renaissance painting: delicately free-flowing, solvent-free, and with no fillers or additives. Founded by artists, M. Graham Oils use only the finest vehicle, Walnut Oil to make some of the finest oil paints on the market! Walnut oil provides a "unique refractive index" and will not yellow over time, which allows for incredible paint brilliance. Walnut oil's unique body allows for an increased amount of pigment suspension in comparison with other oils, giving their paint higher color saturation and tinting strength, as a result. Manufactured with only the finest example of each available pigment source, their paints contain no fillers, extenders, or adulterants, which have negative effects on color and how the eye perceives it. Hand-crafted in small batches, attention is paid to adapting manufacturing processes to specific pigment "personalities" and requirements. Use of proper milling pressure for each pigment helps to achieve optimum pigment load and dispersion. Artists run the Quality Control Department at M. Graham, assuring the quality of everything they manufacture. A green company, their products and manufacturing is solvent-free. GOLDEN Open Acrylic Paints Green Gold 5 ozSave Up to30%Off listGreen Slow-drying acrylic paint that enables painters to explore techniques GOLDEN OPEN paint is a slow-drying acrylic paint that enables painters to explore techniques traditionally reserved for oil paints. The slow-drying quality gives artists longer working time for easier blending and even subtractive techniques. There is a unique thinner and mediums for use with OPEN, but the paints are compatible with regular fast-drying acrylics and clean up with soap and water like regular acrylics. OPEN Acrylics are formulated with an optimum balance of pigment load and 100% acrylic polymer dispersion to produce a paint with a uniquely relaxed set of working characteristics and a versatility that allows artists to explore a wider range of techniques such as portraiture and landscape painting that rely on softening, shading, glazing, and creating fine detail. Increased working time of these colors expands their range to include more traditional techniques once only possible with oils Key Features:* Resists skinning, remain wet on the palette for extended periods* Feels like no other paint* Stays wet longer* Expands the boundaries of acrylics* Formulated with an optimum balance* Tubes: 2oz. & 5oz. / Jars: 4oz. & 8oz.* Titanium White: 32oz. Jar* 100% acrylic polymer dispersion* Perfect For:* A uniquely relaxed set of working characteristics and versatility* Allowing artists to explore a wider range of techniques* Portraiture and landscape painting* Softening, shading, glazing, and creating fine detail* Plein air painting, mono-printing, and screenprinting* Drying time can also be accelerated by mixing OPEN with faster-drying acrylics like our Fluid and Heavy Body colors* Reducing the amount of paint wasted and preserving color mixtures for future use How long does it take for Golden Open acrylics to dry? GOLDEN OPEN typically dries in 3-5 hrs. To control viscosity while maintaining the maximum working time Use OPEN Mediums and Thinner. To accelerate drying time, OPEN Acrylics may be blended with faster-drying GOLDEN Acrylics, Gels, and Mediums. OPEN Acrylics resist skinning, remain wet on the palette for extended periods, and exhibit a remarkable versatility that allows them to be used directly from the tube for plein air painting, mono-printing, and screenprinting. OPEN Acrylics may be blended with other GOLDEN Acrylic Colors, Mediums, and Gels, with the open time of the resulting mixtures being proportionately reduced. Because OPEN Acrylics dry slowly, painters who cover their palettes or use sealed containers have been able to use the same colors for weeks, reducing the amount of paint wasted and preserving color mixtures for future use. GOLDEN Heavy Body Acrylics - Chromium Oxide Green, 5oz TubeSave Up to30%Off listGreen Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paints- Professionally Loved Acrylics! The original line of paints! GOLDEN Heavy Body acrylic paints are known to be exceptionally smooth with a thick, buttery consistency and contain the largest assortment of unique pure pigments in a 100% acrylic emulsion vehicle available to the professional artist. These colors offer excellent permanency and lightfastness. There are no fillers, extenders, opacifiers, toners, or dyes added. Each Heavy Body acrylic color is formulated differently depending on the nature of the pigment. Colors that tolerate higher pigment "loads" dry to a more opaque, matte finish. Colors that are more reactive and do not accept high pigment loading, dry to a glossy finish and tend to be more transparent. Heavy Body colors contain no additives, such as matting agents, therefore the gloss of each color will be different. Key Features:* Exceptionally smooth, rich, buttery consistency* Dries quickly, permanent and archival in quality* Ability to "stand up" and retain brush strokes* All HB colors are thixotropic in nature* Retain excellent flexibility when dry, diminishing the possibility of cracking* Heavy Body viscosity can also be reduced successfully with water* No flattening agents* No opacifiers added to colors* Clearest and cleanest quality* 101 different colors, shades and tints* 30 colors are mixture colors, the rest of produced from single, unique pigments* Concentrated/Chemically Pure Cadmiums Perfect For:* Approved for professional artist* 100% acrylic binder* Freeze-thaw stability* "stand up" and retain brush strokes or palette knife marks on the canvas* Largest assortment of unique pure pigments* There are no fillers, extenders, opacifiers, toners, or dyes added* Can be mixed with all of our GOLDEN Mediums, Gels and other paint lines C.P. Cadmiums = A grade that has a high concentration of cadmium and is considered the highest quality. The C.P. designation has been associated with both “Chemically Pure” and "Concentrated Pigment". Which translation you come across will often depend on the source and context. In terms of “(CC)”, it refers to “Concentrated Cadmium” and was adopted by the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) as a way to differentiate higher quality cadmiums from lesser quality cadmium-barium pigments. All Heavy Body colors are thixotropic in nature This means that when brushing or stirring, the paints actually lose viscosity and feel much thinner. The faster the paints are moving, the thinner they feel. Returned to a state of rest, the paints gradually increase in thickness until they are again restored to their formulated viscosity. The Heavy Body line of acrylics contains no additional flattening agents, opacifiers or other solids that might interfere with the clarity of our pigments Please note: The items on this page are available at the Best Lowest Price Possible and no further discounts can be applied. Williamsburg Handmade Oil Paint - Bohemian Green Earth, 237ml CanSave Up to30%Off listGreen Handmade Master Quality Oil Paints - Manufactured In The U.S.A! Getting the proper pigment is just the beginning! So much of the quality of oil paint is in the grinding. Each color is ground to enhance the beauty and luminosity specific to that particular pigment. Some colors by nature will feel slightly gritty, others extremely smooth. For instance, Cerulean Blue will have a beautiful velvet, light-absorbing surface with an extremely strong covering power; Siennas, by comparison, are often chunky or gritty to allow light to travel through the vehicle, exposing rich golden or mahogany undertow instead of just heavy, dull browns. Pigments are ground in pure alkali-refined, ph balanced linseed oil, and made in batches no larger than 5 gallons at a time. This gives total control over the paint, much like late 19th-century French color makers. All materials are hand measured, and every ounce of paint is scrutinized. Williamsburg Handmade Oil Colors are then packaged in 37ml and 150ml non-reactive aluminum tubes. Williamsburg Handmade Oil Colors are used by the world’s finest artists, whose works can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MOMA in New York City, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Beaubourg in Paris. Key Features:* Professional, Handmade Oil Colors* Incredibly pigment rich paint* Dense buttery texture* Extensive Cobalt & Cadmium Colors* Large assortment of Earth Colors* Oil color line of 178 colors!* 37ml & 150ml Tubes* 237ml & 473ml Cans* Perfect For:* Professional Oil Painters* Discerning students & amateurs* Artists favoring Old Masters materials* Enthusiasts of handmade oil paints* Producing museum-quality artworks See More
