The motivation for creating the Berlin Synthetic Long Handle Brush series were artists just like you! We set out to eliminate all of the drawbacks associated with synthetic acrylic brushes. Specifically: synthetic hair that did not hold color or perform with the control and precision of natural hair. With the help of our German brush manufacturer and customer input, we created the Berlin series. As a result of our research, all Berlin brushes are interlocked using a special heat treatment process that creates a bounce-back memory effect and produces a brush with great shape and resistance. Berlin brushes use a blend of four different filament diameter sizes between .1mm to .28mm. The mix of filament hair is dependent on the size and shape of the brush. The synthetic filament hair is also treated and shaped so that each brush closely parallels natural hair in texture and tapers to create a very robust brush body with a soft feel at the tip. Each Berlin brush features a nickel-plated silver ferrule and a long Blue Turquoise handle made of wood from sustainable forests. The handles are dipped in a high-grade varnish four times, which helps to keep them in good condition if properly cleaned. Image Transfer How-To Nearly any gel, medium, or acrylic paint will work to lift an image, depending on the texture, clarity, and color you want to trap the image within. 1. Apply the gel or paint, and while it is wet, place the image side of a printed laser paper copy directly into the wet gel. Let dry overnight. 2. Dampen the paper with a wet sponge. Wait a few minutes to allow water to soak paper. Begin rubbing carefully. Use a soft cloth or scrubbie to remove the paper. Mediums modify the working properties of oil color from the tube – from a fluid consistency for expressive mark making to a stiff paste for creating thick, crisp marks. Painting mediums also broaden the visual qualities of our colors – from increasing the transparency of paint layers, to creating a range of surface qualities, from high gloss to matte. Gamblin’s family of Galkyd painting mediums and Cold Wax Medium are formulated with Gamsol. We recommend only Gamsol for thinning these materials. Alkali Refined Linseed Oil - Processed from flax seeds. This linseed is the purest and lightest industrially produced variety. Cold Pressed Linseed Oil - Made from the first pressing of flax seeds without heat or chemicals of any kind. Cold Wax Medium - Made from natural white unbleached beeswax. Mix directly into colors. Cold Wax creates an ultra-thick, matte impasto. For greater shine and flexibility mix with Galkyd medium. Thin 20-40% with water to desired consistency. Application Apply with brush, paint-roller, spray equipment, squeegee or palette knife. Mix up only as much as is needed for one day"s work, as the solids will settle rapidly and be extremely difficult to mix back into suspension. Surface Preparation Non-absorbent surfaces should be abraded for increased adhesion. Prime with GOLDEN Gesso or other suitable primers (depending on substrate). Apply one or more coats of GOLDEN Pastel Ground to achieve the desired tooth. On paper, use heavier weight stock to avoid buckling. Allow ground to fully dry before applying media. Color Additions Pastel Ground can be blended with GOLDEN Acrylic Paints to achieve colored grounds. However, add minimal amounts of color since all additions of paint to Ground will decrease the tooth. GOLDEN High Flow Acrylics and Fluid Acrylics blend easily into the ground without thickening the product. High Load Acrylics have the highest pigment load and therefore provide the most color in the least amount of paint. Unless transparency is desired, select paints that are inherently opaque, such as the Pyrroles or earth colors. This will allow lower additions as well. Airbrushing thin layers of color after the ground has dried will give the strongest saturation of color to the ground without affecting the gritty surface. See More
