These high-quality mat boards are acid and lignin free and feature an alpha-cellulose core in white or black. The conservation quality of the board ensures that your matted art, photos, and documents will stand the test of time. Each board is alkaline-sized and buffered with calcium carbonate for enhanced durability and longevity, and uses no optical brighteners. The richly colored cover papers are available in a wide range of shades to ensure the perfect match for your artwork! Please note: Even though Ambiance Mats are PreCut, we carefully cut each mat by hand, so it may take longer to ship your mats. Please call customer service if there are any questions about timing! Surface and backing papers are still conservation grade. Why use acid and lignin free Acid within the paper will cause it to age and disintegrate much quicker, particularly when subjected to heat and light. This becomes a problem for products which require preservation such as artwork, prints, photos and important documents. Paper, card & mat that is labelled 'Acid Free' are manufactured to last a minimum of 100 years. 'Acid Free' papers are manufactured within the conservation grade category of acid free paper which is generally formed from wood based pulp that has been treated or buffered to neutralize the acidity. Paper which is lignin free stays acid free much longer and therefore the paper and card lasts considerably longer. Removing lignin is a costly process and also shortens the fibers within the pulp, however for papers that require preservation. See More
