Authentic Japanese Washi & Kozo Papers for Sumi-E Ink and Painting
Aitoh’s traditional Japanese Sumi-E, Washi, and Kozo papers deliver the ideal surface for sumi-ink, brush painting, calligraphy, charcoal, pastel, and light watercolor washes. Handmade in Japan from authentic mulberry (Kozo) and Washi fibers, these papers offer natural absorbency, crisp ink response, and the organic texture artists expect from true Japanese paper. The lightly textured Washi sheets let brushstrokes bloom and feather beautifully, enhancing expressive sumi-e techniques, while Kozo fibers add strength for heavy ink loads and detailed mark-making. Each pad includes 48 sheets bound with a loose-thread edge for easy removal, mounting, or framing.
The roll of Kozo paper is made of strong mulberry bark fibers that prevent the paper from tearing while printing. The translucent quality of the roll makes it ideal for transfer work and layering techniques in printmaking. Both the Sumi-E sketch and Kozo paper respond well to brayer work, water-based inks, and sumi ink.
Tip: Mount sheet on a board for heavy washes, and let ink dry flat to avoid warping.
Best Uses of Kozo and Washi PaperL: Kozo paper is best for professional sumi-e, calligraphy, and printmaking due to its strength and crisp ink response, while Washi paper is ideal for daily practice, light watercolor, sketching, and traditional Japanese craft.
