During the manufacturing process, great care is taken to avoid overworking the pigment. The amount of time required for the milling process varies for each color – anywhere from six hours to three days. The amount of oil required for each pigment varies because each pigment absorbs at a different rate. Richeson uses only pure, artist-grade, dry pigments. The finest grade of alkali-refined linseed oil is used to make non-yellowing colors. This type of oil is well-known for its excellent color stability. “Straw" in color, the oil has a minimal effect on pigment colorization and will not darken with age. While the use of these adulterations can save a lot of work and reduce the cost of materials, they lower the quality of the paint.
