Holbein Artists’ Oil Pastels are soft, creamy, and fun to use. Endorsed by the Oil Pastel Association of America (OPA), Holbein Artists’ Oil Pastels move and feel like creamy chalk pastels minus the dust. The color lays down cleanly and evenly without stickiness. You can mix the rich colors dry or with linseed oil. Holbein's unique manufacturing process involves computers and machines from start to finish. They guarantee color consistency by tracking pigment distribution and purity. The colors never completely dry out because Holbein suspends the pigments in a mixture of wax and mineral oil. These pastels provide brilliant results on paper and canvas. The large square stick shape is easy to hold and less prone to breakage. Spray fixative is unnecessary as it will only detract from the richness of the color. We recommend that you frame your mounted work behind glass for an extra layer of protection. An important characteristic of PanPastel Colors is that they work well on SO many different surfaces - from very low tooth to high tooth. E.g. from delicate surfaces through to toothy pastel (sand-paper) surfaces and everything in between…drawing papers, pastel papers, canvas, vellum, watercolor papers, print-making papers, cardstock, digital/ink-jet papers (matt) etc. Also, because they are not wet, PanPastel Colors don’t cause lightweight papers to “buckle”, and the Sofft sponge tools are gentle on delicate papers such as Japanese handmade papers. Each artist normally gravitates towards his or her own preferred surface. Don’t limit yourself – experiment! Some examples of how PanPastel looks on different surfaces are shown at our substrates page. Our gallery also shows the variety of surfaces being used by artists with PanPastel. See More
