Good color is vital for the success of the painter! Thick and Rich Color! Good color is vital for the success of the painter. Only oil colors that act like oil colors and provide for lasting and predictable results should be considered by any artist at any skill level. Many brands of student grade oil color don't feel like genuine oil colors and don't mix well, ultimately achieving less appealing results in a finished painting. This artist range of colors is designed for all artists at all skill levels. It is particularly well loved by oil colorists that use lots of color seeking high performance and economy. SoHo Oils are slowly ground on triple roller mills allowing pure refined linseed oil to completely encapsulate the pigment for maximum luminosity and superb handling properties. SoHo Urban Artist Oil Colors eliminate the need for student oils, providing first time artists and professional artists on a tight budget the use of "real" color with a buttery consistency, excellent pigment load and lightfast results. That way, once they can afford better, they can move up to a more expensive brand, already familiar with what a true oil color can do. Glazing is no problem with these colors, and palette knife painting is quick and expressive, just as you would expect from far more costly brands. If you are looking for the next step up in color, we recommend Lukas Studio Oil Colors. Available in bonus size tubes! 50ml tube offers 20% more paint than traditional 40ml tubes, 170ml tubes offers 13.3% more paint than traditional 150ml tubes, 430ml cans offer 72% more paint than traditional 250ml jars of paint. Each pure Richeson pigment is ground to its own correct degree of fineness and formulated under exacting laboratory controls. . During the manufacturing process, great care is taken to avoid overworking the pigment. The amount of time required for the milling process varies for each color – anywhere from six hours to three days. The amount of oil required for each pigment varies because each pigment absorbs at a different rate. Richeson uses only pure, artist-grade, dry pigments. The finest grade of alkali-refined linseed oil is used to make non-yellowing colors. This type of oil is well-known for its excellent color stability. “Straw" in color, the oil has a minimal effect on pigment colorization and will not darken with age. Certain colors, such as whites, flesh colors, ice blue, and brilliant yellow light, use safflower oil. With these sensitive pigments that yellow easily, safflower oil produces a much better non-yellowing color. Where appropriate, we use a blend of linseed and safflower oil, producing the best possible finished product. Click on the item number to view the contents of each set. See More

I've used all of those latter paints quite a bit, but casein has qualities all its own. It can be used transparently, but it has great opacity when you need it, something often lacking in acrylic. It's one of the oldest paint mediums, dating all the way back to the Egyptians – JAMES GURNEY" What is Casein? Casein (kay'seen) is a quick-drying, aqueous medium using a milk-based binding agent, and is one of the most durable mediums known to man. Nine thousand year old casein cave paintings have been discovered in Asia. Later, the medium was used by Byzantine, Roman and Renaissance artists, including the Old Masters. Known for their versatility and array of capabilities, casein paints can be used to create a variety of effects from the rich opaques of oil to thin watercolor washes. Because casein has an exceptional integrity of color and always dries to a perfect matte finish, it is unexcelled for art reproduction. The velvety matte finish can also be buffed to a satin sheen or varnished to produce a resemblance to oils. Over time, casein pigments become resistant to moisture and as history has proven, the medium has a durability and permanence which has easily stood the test of time. Because it dries quickly, it is possible to lay down a glaze and move onto the next stage within a few hours instead of waiting for days, or even months, as with oils. Can I mix casein with other mediums? Yes you can! Use casein over watercolor or gouache or as an underpainting for acrylic, pastel or oils. If using casein under oils, apply a barrier layer of Damar varnish over the casein before the oil paint. Casein can also be used under oils as an excellent underpainting medium. See More
