Surface and backing papers are still conservation grade. Why use acid and lignin free Acid within the paper will cause it to age and disintegrate much quicker, particularly when subjected to heat and light. This becomes a problem for products which require preservation such as artwork, prints, photos and important documents. Paper, card & mat that is labelled 'Acid Free' are manufactured to last a minimum of 100 years. 'Acid Free' papers are manufactured within the conservation grade category of acid free paper which is generally formed from wood based pulp that has been treated or buffered to neutralize the acidity. Paper which is lignin free stays acid free much longer and therefore the paper and card lasts considerably longer.
