For over 50 years the Narozni family has crafted premium artists' canvases in Provence, France, still hand produced and primed. Today, they have passed this knowledge to Chassis France, the French specialist manufacturing canvas and frames for over 60 years. Still hand produced and primed, the close attention to detail is what makes ArtFix not a commodity, but a premium product for the educated and discerning artist who chooses the very finest canvases for painting. Much time and education is spent on learning why linen is superior to cotton canvas, but less is known as to why polyester is becoming popular as a painting surface. Polyester is a modern surface solution for the professional painter. Polyester stands apart from its linen and cotton counterparts as it isn’t affected by moisture, so it experiences far less temperature related expansion and contraction than cotton or linen endures. Its synthetic nature creates a stable and chemically compatible environment. The ability for polyester to be spun and create a super fine thread allows for ability to create flawless, extra fine surfaces that are popular with portrait and realist painters. Art conservators use polyester for relining old delicate canvases; they can be adhered to the stretched polyester without the fear of buckling, thus providing a moisture-proof barrier between stretchers and the wall that archival lasts forever. ArtFix polyester rolls are primed with anywhere from 2 to 6 coats of a specially formulated universal primer, 2 to 4 coats of oil primer, or pre-sized unprimed raw or raw tinted polyester (tinting gives it more the appearance of a natural linen color). Canvas Style Notes: "C" Styles - Lead-style Oil Primed: ArtFix’s specially formulated oil priming gives the traditional qualities of lead priming, without its toxicity. the unique absorbency allows oil paints to bite into the surface, increasing adhesion and depth of color. Colors glow from within when glazed on the surface. “C" Style rolls are highly recommended for all oils and alkyd paintings. "U" Styles - Universal Primed: ArtFix’s “U" style’s carefully formulated acrylic universal priming emulates many characteristics of oil-based primers, but maintains the durability and elasticity of acrylic priming. Unlike glossy acrylic primers, the surface is more matte and a bit more absorbent to promote exceptional adhesion to a variety of media. Excellent for works in oils, acrylics, and even drawing media (oil stick, pastels, charcoal, graphite), due to the absorbent surface. When mounted to a stiff surface, even brittle media like egg tempera and caseins work beautifully on the universal primed surface and smooth polyester texture. Unprimed: Pre-sized, ArtiFix unprimed rolls are ready to accept whatever form of custom priming you desire, from clear or colored gessos, oil priming, pastel primer, etc. Please see tech notes on each individual line item canvas for information on canvas type, weight, surface texture, media, priming information, and best uses for each canvas style to find what roll best suits your artistic techniques and needs. But here's the twist you can also paint on it with any media! The priming is the key. Imagine a canvas so versatile that it will accept any paint, ink or marker you have in your studio. Imagine the possibilities. The Watercolor Surface - Many watercolorists draw with permanent marker as they create their watercolors. With this surface you can draw right into your watercolor without feathering or smudging or you can paint on top of the drawing. A unique twist to this canvas is that you can draw with permanent marker and use the lines to form a resist for your watercolors. This is very similar to resists used for silk painting. It is quite amazing and interesting. For traditional watercolor painting the color sits right up on the surface and allows for easy lifting, scratching into the paint film, reworking the painted surface and even layering for unique effects. Use with opaque or transparent colors. This canvas works best with tube watercolor and provides rich, vibrant expressions. Acrylics and Watercolors - We don't know where art will lead you but you may want to start off playing with watercolors and gouache reworking or even removing areas then fine tuning and finally finishing off the top layers with permanent acrylics. Of course you don't need to use watercolors with your acrylics but you can if you want. You'll find this surface to be fantastic with virtually any acrylic based paint from heavy body to acrylic based inks to airbrush colors. Before applying watercolor, we suggest that you clean the canvas thoroughly with high-strength Isopropyl alcohol to remove any hand-oils from the canvas. Surface oils may have accumulated from manufacturing, packaging, or unwrapping the canvas. Cleaning the canvas should prevent the paint from beading up on the surface. See More
