Originally developed as a process for printing patterns on cloth, Woodcut (the earliest type of relief print) was used by the 5th century for printing text and images on paper. Fine art printmaking covers an entire family of types, from Relief (woodcut, linocut, metalcut), Intaglio (engraving, etching, mezzotint, aquatint), Planographic (lithography, monotyping), and Stencil (screenprinting/seriography, pochoir). Printmaking can be done in everything from additions (multiples of a set number) to single prints called monoprints. Whew-- this all sounds confusing! So where exactly does one get started? This FB Live Episode features an education in basic printmaking with modern tools and substrates, where we will break it down into simple supplies and techniques needed to start out.
