Richeson Studio Watercolor Paper Bulk Packs is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get Real.... I felt compelled to write a review after reading the several posted here. Working on a $2 sheet of paper can really kill the idea of just trying something new and throwing the result away. If I spend more than 30 minutes on a sheet, I am misusing this paper, And I am never overcome with grief that the tape has ripped my paper because I only put a short little strip in each side to hold it in place. I don't give the paper enough time to even know it's been painted on. I think reviewer Cat has it right. This is for the quick, have at it experience with the subject in front of you. Darn the torpedoes... Splash! Splash! Brilliance, and then ...Mud!! That's how we learn. This paper was made to be an experience, not an end product, but that can happen sometimes. True, you are lucky if you get a third wash that holds, but that's not this paper's purpose. This paper allows one to build a strong relationship with your colors, your brushes, your paints and their ( and your) mixing potential. This paper serves that purpose perfectly at 30 cents a sheet!! ( .15 cents if you use both sides). Archival? No. Abandons the inhibitions and an shouts, "let's try again with a fresh sheet of cheap paper? A screaming big YES!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A bit more to add to my earlier review I wrote an enthusiastic - and truthful - review on this paper above. I wanted to clarify a bit more on the point of how it is best used and its archival qualities or lack thereof. As I wrote before, it is GREAT for experimentation and quick work, for example in figure drawing sessions with watercolors or other water-soluble media. It is also perfect for studies and warmups. The way it takes washes is inspiring and will have you getting out of your self-imposed shell. That's because it's both cheap and responsive. However, it is probably not archival, i.e., reliable for long-term display of paintings in a lighted room. Although it is holding up pretty well so far in my light test, it did change color quickly at the beginning. If you produce something you'd like to preserve, I'd recommend getting a digital image and keeping that. Framing this paper in UV-protective glass might be OK, but I wouldn't bet on it in the long term. Its surface is too soft for some fairly standard watercolor practices (see my original review), though I have found work-arounds. The fact that the paper is pale gray instead of bright white will mean that the whitest whites aren't quite as bright as in the (much) more expensive professional watercolor papers. BUT... The unique combination of cheapness and welcoming surface and robust support encourages experimentation and painterly exploration in a way that most certainly will improve your work and increase your enjoyment of it. THAT is what it is for - learning and playing. I strongly recommend getting some and playing. Your work will improve and you will relax into creativity. What you learn with this paper will then affect your work when you go to the expensive papers. It encourages breakthroughs by leading you to practice, learn and experiment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I know this paper - a terrific deal! I am delighted to see Jerry's offering this paper. I have been using it for the last half-year, having purchased it elsewhere under the name "Richeson Recycled Watercolor Paper." I first heard about it from an enthusiastic and detailed series of reviews from the artist's blog "Roz Wound Up." Roz was absolutely right about it. It's the best possible choice for doing water-based work in figure drawing sessions, a real deal at a buck or less per full sized sheet and a pleasure to use. The paper is a very pale gray with a few rare specks of darker gray. Both sides are usable, though their texture is visually different. One side has a sort of random fine striations while the other is smoother; I don't see an obvious difference in performance. Both sides take pencil, watercolor, gouache, brush pens, markers, and everything else I've thrown at the paper. This paper is unlike other "student grade" watercolor papers in that it takes washes beautifully and evenly, a real pleasure to work with. It has transformed my experiences at figure drawing sessions. It has minimal buckling when wet and colors can be lifted well. The surface is softer and more felt-like than many hard-sized watercolor papers, so beware using masking tape as a resist or using stiff scrub brushes or hard erasers. Lift with a soft (sable or squirrel) brush followed by gentle blotting with a tissue or paper towel and you will be fine. I use an extra-soft plastic eraser with no problem. As for archival quality, I am currently testing this paper along with a variety of inks and markers, by putting matched test strips in a sunny window and in a closed drawer. So far (3 months and counting), here are the results: for samples of this paper stored in the drawer or any other place but taped to the sunny window, there has been no visible change. In the window-tested paper, there was a quick change over the first week or two to a pale ivory color - a nice color, actually - but no further changes since then. I'll be watching to see if anything else happens over the next year, but so far so good. Run, do not walk, to get yourself some of this paper! It's a real deal and a pleasure to use. You don't have to be "precious" in your work because it is inexpensive and its great surface encourages painterly experimentation and discovery.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good Student Paper I purchased a pack of this student grade paper to use for practice while I expand my watercolor, sketching and ink skills. I have a good supply of artist grade watercolor paper on hand. However, I envision dollar signs clicking away whenever attempting new techniques, color schemes and other experiments. I like to cut these Richeson sheets in half and adhere the dry sheets with artist tape to several smaller gator boards. This way I can quickly grab one and play when the mood strikes. I like the 135 lb weight as compared to other student grade watercolor paper which are typically around 90 lbs. I was surprised to find the paper has decent sizing which allows me to layer washes and lift colors (blot, do not scrub) quite easily. This is a wood pulp paper and I would not attempt to compare it to the cotton artist papers. It meets my needs to explore without guilt and the price was right considering it I bought on sale along with a coupon. I do use the artist grade papers to create my "masterpieces" with. Ha.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good It took a while to arrive, the first item I ordered from this company came in no time at all and that was at X-Mas, this one took so long I was starting to get worried. The product itself is great and it was the massive amount as advertised. :D I'm well pleased with it and plan on using it in my art projects. :)
