I was recently commissioned to paint a portrait of Richie Sambora, guitar legend from the rock band, Bon Jovi. My client chose a 24x30in size, MUCH bigger than I generally work with, so I was a bit intimidated by the idea of enlarging the human face, and no clear detailed photos to work with But it ended up being a great experience because the challenge took me out of my comfort zone, therefore truly tested my skills and ability.
I’ve done over 100 Bon Jovi paintings, but this was ‘The King’ of the crop! (see the entire collection at: www.facebook.com/RockAndRollArt)

“I love working with water-oils because I do much of my work with my fingers, and Lukas has a nice, smooth consistency, plus they don’t contain harsh chemicals,”

I chose a ‘YES!’ canvas from Jerry’s. Great quality, almost 2in thick, and super price for the size! They also carry a multitude of colors in Lukas Berlin water based oil paints, of which i picked quite a few for this venture.. the skin tone is perfect! None, or very little mixing required to achieve the perfect shade.
I love working with water-oils because I do much of my work with my fingers, and Lukas has a nice, smooth consistency, plus they don’t contain harsh chemicals, and are super easy to clean off with soap and water. Its also got a quick drying time, which is essential for me because i work very fast, (my pieces generally take about 9 full hours), and need to be able to paint detail on top of paint.

And, when I’m NOT using my fingers for the tiny detail, I picked out a nice assortment of Berlin Synthetic Acrylic Brushes in various sizes, also very reasonably priced compared to my local art store, and a much larger assortment was available.

When I paint, I post the stages of work on my facebook page for the fans to follow. They enjoy watching the ease, and unconventional means in which I paint, making my subject come to life before their eyes, and they anxiously await each new post until the piece is complete.

During the that time, I’m also in close contact with my client who will view my progress & give me their input & reaction.
