Sennelier Oil Color Varnishes

Professional Oil Varnishes for Exceptional Results

With a long tradition in oils, French manufacturer Sennelier’s professional varnishes allow you to beautifully protect a painting from natural and chemical attacks. Varnishes can alter the sheen of work if desired, providing a uniform matte, satin, or even gloss appearance. Work can be preserved even in the drying stages by a temporary varnish. Choice of varnish depends on the nature of the work, the desired effect, and the speed of drying. Final varnishes should only be applied to a completely dry work, meaning waiting a year to 18 months before varnishing (depending on the painting surface thickness, techniques used, and location humidity). The application of a varnish must take place two stages. The first coat of varnish should be a diluted varnish (10-20% dilution). After being allowed to dry for a day or two (may take longer under humid conditions), the second coat of varnish can be applied, as an undiluted coat or diluted 10%. Spread the varnish well by brushing in each direction when applying.

Mastic Gum Varnish (final varnish)- A very attractive varnish with an unbeatable gloss appearance, it is also one of the most expensive… Used a great deal by past generations of painters. The varnish is composed of 33% Mastic Gum (from Chios). Produces a resistant, high gloss and high build film, with a tendency to discolor slightly over time. Easily reversable. Apply only on completely dry paintings. Thin with rectified turpentine spirit.

Extra Fine Painting Varnish (final varnish)- A concentrated Dammar gum based final painting varnish, it provides an attractive gloss and high build film. Only apply on completely dry paint. Avoid application in damp weather. Thin with mineral spirits or turpentine.

Matte Painting Varnish (final varnish)- Synthetic resin-based final varnish that produces a colorless, high resistance film. Dries rapidly, and should only be applied to completely dry paint. Thin with rectified turpentine spirit. Sennelier recommends first applying a coat of diluted Satin Painting Varnish (or Insulating or Gloss Varnish) prior to applying the Matte Varnish. Shake container well before use. By mixing a larger or smaller proportions of Gloss Painting Varnish with the Matte, you can obtain a custom satin effect without losing any of the brightness of the painting’s colors.

Satin Painting Varnish (final varnish)- Synthetic resin-based final varnish, that is an intermediate finish between Gloss and Matte Painting Varnishes. Rapid drying, only several hours are needed to obtain the final finish. A colorless, satin film, the varnish is non-yellowing and highly resistant. Creates a transparent and reflection-free finish that is not easily reversible. Apply only to completely dry paint. Thins with turpentine.

Gloss Painting Varnish (final varnish)- A synthetic resin-based final varnish, the gloss finish is completely colorless, rapid drying, and provides a resistant film that is difficult to reverse. Apply only to completely dry paint. Thins with rectified turpentine spirit.

Turner Retouching Varnish (temporary varnish)- A light dammar gum-based varnish, Turner Retouch is used as a temporary varnish to protect the canvas from dust, pollutants, and during transport while it is oxidizing. Since it has a very diluted base, it does not suffocate the painting and does not slow the oxidation process much. It reduces in strength over time, so a permanent varnish is still needed once the painting is fully dry. Retouch Varnish is also used to correct sinkage while painting (matte areas that appear on the painting during the painting process), brighten tones, or to provide tooth when restarting painting on an oil work that as dried. Can be thinned with petroleum spirits or turpentine.
