Creative Mark School Etching Press is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Things to do right out of the box... This is a barebones baby press. It will do the job, but there's no frills. There's a few things you'll want to do right away. First, make sure it's properly aligned. Mine needed it. Set it on as flat a surface as you have and loosen all the bolts a little with the included hex key. Let the frame come into alignment with the nice flat surface and gradually tighten the bolts, a little bit on each one until they're all snug. Second, it came unlubricated and it needs lubrication. "Liquid Bearings" synthetic oil worked for me. Put a drop where metal meets metal on anything that moves and work it in by turning the crank, rolling the rollers, etc. The blanket that came with it needed (IMHO) to be supplemented with pieces cut from a wool army blanket. Do these things and you'll be happier with your press. Also, there's no scales on the side. A ruler works, but a pocket caliper from home Depot costs seven dollars and will make your life much easier by not only taking measurements but by allowing you to compare directly the relative positions of the top roller on either side of the press. It wedges nicely between the brass holding the roller and the frame. Be ready to push hard on the bed while cranking if the pressure is high.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible, wish I could give it 0 stars This press is worthless. I have been around printing presses and been doing printmaking for quite a while now, so I know how a press should operate. Here are the problems I experienced; 1. It arrives without instructions. It isn't hard to set up if you have worked with presses before. I have, and I can tell you, it doesn't work at all. 2. I couldn't even get it to roll a small piece of unmounted linoleum. The reason is that the bottom roller doesn't grip the steel bed. It merely grinds against it. After several days of adjusting the tension, it still doesn't work. The moment the linoleum hits the rollers, it stops. 3. The screw on the handle backs out when pressure is applied during rolling. So, I had to keep tightening it to turn the press. 4. The plastic caps on the handles that adjust the tension fall off continuously. This allows the handles to slip out of their holes. This might sound like minor fixes to you, but imagine if you paid over $100 for something at a store around the corner from you, and it didn't work. You would take it right back not fix it. I see that it regularly sells for more than I paid. I feel happy that I didn't spend that much. Do yourself a favor and spend more for a quality press. You'll be happier. I have placed many orders with Jerry's and have always been pleased with my purchased. I'm surprised they would sell something of such poor quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More than I expected for the price I am a printmaking artist, college professor, and I refurbish/maintain presses on the side. This little guy is surprisingly well made with attention to details. I got it to help with workshops I teach, to introduce students to the idea of a press and just because they like to play around with different equipment. It is bottom driven, meaning it needs sufficient pressure before the bed will engage. A little push from your hand will do the trick. Everyone is complaining about not knowing how to set the pressure- if you have any printmaking experience at all, you will know how to do it by feel. Turn gauges clockwise for more pressure... Pretty basic. If you want numbers around the gauges (called mico gauges) you will have to invest a couple thousand dollars in a Charles Brand or Takach press. It would probably help to mount the press to a board for stability, and get better blankets because the ones that came with the press are not even real felts. This press is purely for fun and can't replace a professional quality press, but I am happy I made the purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect size for small runs Fits on workbench, but should be bolted down. Good for small sizes and short runs.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but confusing Bought this a s a gift for my wife, who is block printing with wood, not linoleum. There was very little information about it and whether it would or wouldn't work with Wood. There was no instructions or manual that came with it. Using it is completely trial and error. Should you use the blanket, not use the blanket with wood????

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Table top press This is a solid little press, that works about as well as you would hope. It cannot compare to a full sized intaglio press, but it gets the job done. Place on silicon rubber pads to prevent moving Pros- Solid build non nonsense design, was able to produce reasonable copper etching plate print. You will have to experiment to learn how to determine pressure and especially how to push base plate and mat/paper together to get traction on lower roller. Took about six tries to get to print quality in picture Cons- Zero directions or recommendations for various uses. Really unforgivable for a manufacturer. Small roller diameter starts to curl copper plates after a few runs. Very difficult to get plate and roller to engage. Rust patches on upper roller Recommendations- Texture the underside of plate to easily engage lower roller include directions/recomendations

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best purchase I just bought the etching press to give a professional class on engraving at Chicago from México and it´s been the best purchase so far. Im bringing it with me at Guanajuato. This has been my fist purchase at Jerry´s and its been wonderful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As promised. Great product for low budget artists. Excellent press for the price. FYI: though it's heavy weight keeps it basically stable, for added grip I put a non-skid rubber mat underneath...no need to clamp to work surface. The mat keeps it secure, and truly makes the unit portable since you are not limited to work surfaces.

I recently purchased the Creative Mark Etching Press ( the carton school press) for a really cheap price. I used it but found that the metal bed with the blanket on it didn't move move when I granked the handled. I am puzzled as how to remedy this.

Tried using it with white felt blanket it comes with. Printing an aluminum drypoint but had repeated issue as metal base slides but felt stops or gets caught under roller. This causes paper and plate to shift as well-more blankets needed??

Asked by: Shumph
I tried adding another felt blanket and also tried adding a layer of thin foam (cut a thin yoga mat). The problem is still there. Major slipping as base slides but top layers just get stuck under top roller. Very frustrating!  I'm surprised no one else has this problem. I've worked on many etching presses--top of the line and cheaper ones like this model.

I see the maximum roller opening is 1 inch. Could I print with American Type High type, which I read is .918 inches high?

Asked by: gfreeman
As long as the plate can fit within the rollers with room for the felt, paper, and aluminum plate then you can use this print plate. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Will this work for letter press? Commercially produced plates like from Boxcar?

The Max separation of rollers for this press is 1" and there is no minimum. You can use commercially produced plates if the depth of the plate is less than 1" and will fit within the rollers. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

I am contemplating purchasing this press for block printing. Could you confirm that it would work with softoleum rubber blocks which are thicker than linoleum. Are they also cheaper shipping rates to Canada? TIA

Asked by: Whalemusic
This press is designed for use with Block Printing, Etching And Monotype Printing and will work with softer linoleum rubber blocks when the pressure of the roll has been adjusted. Our website has been recently updated to figure out those costs when you put an online order together. Once the cart is filled you’ll want to make sure you enter your country from the drop-down menu provided.
