What do Watercolor Mediums Do?

Watercolor mediums help you take your watercolor painting in a number of directions. From modifying pigment to adding texture, the paint will be more vibrant than before as well as help paint flow more freely when used with a wet brush, also making it easier to layer colors and textures. The possibilities are endless as you can achieve different results with the watercolor mediums from thick vibrant colors to transparent washes through a variety of techniques. They will help you create stunning pieces of art and open up your creativity.

  • Gum Arabic - Main binder medium for watercolors and gouache. May be used to create paints, or mixed with watercolors to increase gloss and transparency.
  • Oxgall - for watercolor and gouache is water-mixable and decreases surface tension in colors diluted with water. Liquid preparation watercolor medium for wetting painting surfaces; aids color flow.
  • Masking Fluid - Removable liquid frisket used to temporarily cover areas of paper and block paint. Pre-testing fluid on certain papers is recommended. Can be used to create cloud and sky effects and more with it's temporary cover
