Rated 5 out of 5 by Steve H from Best and most versatile - works very well I have both the other lead pointer offered here and this one. This is the one I use virtually all the time. I bought the other lead pointer because I thought its size and shape might make it easier to find room for when traveling, and because it will sharpen both traditional pencils and leads in holders. Other than trying it out, I haven't used it. I like the wood-case pencil sharpener on the other pointer, but ironically, that makes the lead pointer less attractive as it contaminates the graphite with wood shavings. This cylinder pointer does an excellent job when used correctly. As a bonus, the graphite that collects is clean, allowing it to be used with a stomp or tortillion for subtle shading. I find it's easiest to extend the lead first (over-extend it, actually), then insert it into one of the two depth gauge holes until it bottoms out. When it does, I release the clutch to slide the barrel down to the top of the sharpener. Inserting the lead into the hole first and trying to get it to slide to the bottom (to extend it the proper amount) is difficult and unpredictable. Once the lead is extended the proper amount, slip the barrel of the lead holder into the large ferruled hole and spin the top around the barrel to point the lead. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, especially with soft leads. The side pressure of the knurled steel grinding mechanism can easily snap the lead. Spin and apply gentle downward pressure until you feel the resistance to the spinning action lessen or disappear. Remove the now needle-sharp lead from the pointer and slide it into the lead cleaner (the thing that looks like a cigarette filter) to clean the graphite dust from the lead and prevent it from soiling your work. Adjust the exposed lead in the lead holder to an appropriate amount and start drawing. I haven't found a noticeable difference between the two depth gauge holes. I can tell that one is intended to provide a more needle-like point than the other from the icons molded into the top of the pointer, but both seem to result in a similarly sharp point. As I was writing this, I tried using the blunter gauge hole first, followed by the sharper one. I found that I was able to continue sharpening the lead beyond the initial point by re-gauging with the sharper hole, so there may be some benefit. For my work, either gauge hole results in a point that is plenty sharp.
