What is a pastel primer or ground and why is it important?
A pastel primer (or "ground") is an acrylic-based coating mixed with fine silica or pumice that creates a textured (toothy) surface. This unique texture allows pastel, charcoal, and other dry media to adhere effectively—ideal for layering, blending, and achieving vibrant detail. This foundational layer ensures pigments don’t slip off, enabling richer color build-up and maximum control.
On which surfaces can I apply pastel ground?
You can use pastel grounds on a range of supports: paper (300 gsm+), canvas, wood, masonite, and drawing boards. For smooth or non-absorbent surfaces, prepping with regular acrylic gesso is recommended before application to enhance adhesion and prevent buckling.
