What Is a Palette Knife Used For?

A palette knife is a tool used by artists for two main reasons:
  • To mix paints – A palette knife makes it easy for artists to mix paint colors and another nice feature is that palette knives are easy to clean
  • To scrape paint - Generally, palette knives are made of a straight, thin, metal blade with a wooden handle. This makes them excellent tools for scraping art paints off your palette. Some palette knives may be made with plastic, and these may be more appropriate for single use.
Many artists also use palette knives to apply paint to their canvas. They can be helpful tools to introduce texture or scrape paint away on a painting. For many professional artists, palette knives are as essential as easels.

How Big Is a Palette Knife?

A palette knife comes in various shapes and sizes ranging from small to large. The handle of a palette knife is usually around 4”, or big enough to comfortably hold with your hand. The blade of a palette knife may be a similar length and is usually thin and flat.

What Is the Difference Between a Palette Knife and a Painting Knife?

The main difference between a palette knife and a painting knife is that a palette knife is designed for mixing paints and scraping a palette while a painting knife is made for applying paint to canvas.
It is for this reason that palette knives have blades that sit flat whereas the blades on painting knives are angled away from the handle to keep the artist’s hands out of the paint when it is being applied. Many people use the terms interchangeably, but it is helpful to know the difference between these two tools.
