#4 Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts

Jerry’s Artarama has always supported art education and so this year we wanted to show our support of some of the finest in higher art education available in the United States by honoring some of the best schools in our list of the 10 Best Art Schools in the Country.

Coming in at number 4 on our list is VCU School of the Arts

The School of the Arts at VCU in Richmond Virginia offers nationally ranked and award winning programs in sculpture, graphic design, painting, ceramics and printmaking. They offer sixteen academic programs for over 3,000 students. The school prides themselves on their ability to encourage students in their artistic endeavors.

The school of the Arts at VCU is widely renowned even internationally, for their reputation of training and producing fine artists. Professors have won grants such as Guggenhieim Fellowships, MacArthur “Genius” Awards, Emmys, Clios and many more. They even offer an additional location to learn in Qatar.

The Breakdown

  • Professors- Accredited Professors have won countless awards such as 14 awards for Excellence, 12 awards for teaching, 13 awards for distinguished achievement in service, and 12 awards for distinguished achievement in research.
  • Notable Alumnus- Non Sequitur comic artist and author Wiley Miller, comic book artist Mike Wieringo, and professional artists Sterling Hundley and Carol Sutton
  • Local flavor- Richmond is home to a major art hub including museums such as the The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and was once called by The Today Show as the third most tattooed city in the US. 
  • Currently on Display- The Anderson Gallery is currently displaying Forecast, an exhibition inspired by the recent effects of human impact on the planet.
