LUKAS Artists’ Colors was founded In Düsseldorf, Germany in 1862, by Dr. Franz Schoenfeld. Focusing initially on their flagship LUKAS 1862 Aquarelle Watercolor line, as well as superior quality pre-mixed oil paints, it did not take long for LUKAS to gain an excellent reputation as a true artists’ resource. Even Vincent van Gogh used and admired LUKAS oils, and wrote to his brother Theo:
“I have ordered colors from Schoenfeld [LUKAS] in Düsseldorf, as there were some colors which I couldn’t get here…the picture with the potato eaters is not good in some details…I should have had a better result with the mineral blue that I have now [from LUKAS], instead of the old one.”
In 1964, LUKAS combined their century of experience with modern innovative techniques to produce Europe’s first line of acrylic paint: LUKAS CRYL. As with their oils and watercolors, the newer LUKAS acrylics use only the finest pigments and highest quality binder. In addition, all LUKAS paints rate extremely high on the Blue Wool Scale of light fastness: every color rates between a 6 to an 8, meaning they are very permanent and will stand the test of time. Many colors (over half of many LUKAS paint lines) are single-pigment shades as well, meaning you can achieve clean and beautiful color mixes, without worrying about muddiness.
Along with master quality, professional quality, and student grade oil, acrylics and watercolor paints, LUKAS also produces fine artists’ pigments, painting mediums, and mixing accessories for a truly complete painting experience.
Today, LUKAS is making a big splash amongst artists stateside! Jerry’s Artarama is proud to be the exclusive United States distributor of this exquisite line of European artists’ paints, and our customers seem very pleased with it as well!
