What is Alla Prima Painting?

Jerry’s LIVE Episode 67 – Learn What All Prima Painting is!

The term “Alla Prima” confuses most artists. What does it mean? Alla Prima, quite simply, is direct painting- stemming from the Italian term that translates to “at first”. Done in one to two painting sessions, the painting is done wet on wet, with layers never allowed to dry. What movements employed this technique that most artists are familiar with?

Details
Think Impressionism, Expressionism, etc. The painting retains a fresh, immediate, spontaneous look, very different from work that requires an underpainting and “layering” that is done over time on the same work. Join us for this episode, where Amy will demo how to plan out an alla prima oil life- from substrate prep all the way to a finished study!
