We set out to eliminate all of the drawbacks associated with synthetic brushes made for acrylic & oil painting. Specifically: synthetic hair that did not hold color or perform with the control and precision of natural hair. With the help of our German brush manufacturer and customer input, we created the Berlin series. As a result of our research, all Berlin brushes are interlocked using a special heat treatment process that creates a bounce-back memory effect and produces a brush with great shape and resistance. Berlin brushes use a blend of four different filament diameter sizes between .1mm to .28mm. The mix of filament hair is dependent on the size and shape of the brush. The synthetic filament hair is also treated and shaped so that each brush closely parallels natural hair in texture and tapers to create a very robust brush body with a soft feel at the tip. Each Berlin brush features a nickel-plated silver ferrule and a long Blue Turquoise handle made of wood from sustainable forests. The handles are dipped in a high-grade varnish four times, which helps to keep them in good condition if properly cleaned. Refined Walnut Oil - Walnut oil dries at the same rate as linseed oil, but it doesn't yellow as much. The film cures clean and bright. Refined Poppyseed Oil - Refined Poppyseed Oil tempers the consistency of oil paints while increasing their gloss and transparency. Poppyseed oil is often incorporated with whites and light blues because of its non-yellowing nature. Gum Turpentine - Gum Turpentine is a colourless solvent distilled from pine sap. It is used to thin oil paint and generally speeds the drying time and thus is especially useful for underpainting. Dammar Glaze Medium - A traditional glaze medium (with cobalt siccative) that helps add depth and gloss to transparent colors. Known for its speedy drying time of oil colors; use with slower drying colors. Oil Painting Medium - A basic oil medium designed to ease flow and increase gloss, transparency, depth, and bedaub of the pigment color. This medium is a linseed stand oil and turpentine formulation that prevents the yellowing of paint film. Resin-Oil-Wax Medium - A soft painting paste derived from pure bleached beeswax mixed with dammar resin and linseed stand oil. This popular medium creates a lovely satin sheen and gentle impasto in paint layers. Settling of the medium may occur - allow jar to stand in hot water and stir contents until dissolved. Oleo-Resin Medium - A historic glazing medium based on light-colored Canadian balsam fused with dammar resin and linseed stand oil. This versatile medium provides high gloss levels while imparting depth to paint films. Beeswax Paste - A high oil content paste based on linseed stand oil and pure bleached beeswax. The paste increases the body of oil colors with a satin-matte finish, which is especially useful with opaque colors. Balsam Resin Glaze - Another historical glazing medium, it is based on Austrian Larch Turpentine (Venice Turpentine) with Dammar resin and linseed stand oil. This wonderful-smelling medium is added to oil colors to enhance depth, gloss, and luster. Matte Varnish - Creates a long-lasting, protective coating with a beautiful matte finish. Made from real beeswax dissolved in the finest Portuguese Turpentine. Heat the container before using (until the contents turn clear) and then apply one thin coat - dries within minutes. Apply this varnish as a final picture varnish to thoroughly dry oil paint (6 months minimum- up to 18 months if the paint is very thick). Dammar Varnish - Versatile varnish that creates a subtle gloss finish. Made from the best quality dammar resin from Thailand, dissolved in double-rectified Portuguese maritime Turpentine, and then carefully filtered. The finished canvases are then again carefully inspected one last time before they are place on rolls and stocked in the warehouse. There, the rolls are put into boxes or tubes for shipping. These linens we offer are Single (OP) oil-primed using traditional methods, providing a responsive surface that enhances the luminosity and depth of oil paints. Claessens Linen Rolls provide artists with optimal professional quality in painting surfaces and craftsmanship. Each specific primed linen type passed through its own set of manufacturing steps and quality control, resulting in premium painting surfaces Claessens is renowned for. After receiving the raw linens, quality control carefully inspects the entire surface for weaving faults. Abnormally thick threads are scrupulously removed. Next, two layers of synthetic adhesive are applied. Each layer is dried on the canvas in a warm-air oven. For oil primed canvases, zinc white is used as the first coat, bound with linseed oil; carefully applied to the glued linen with trowel-like knives. Then the canvas is sanded and a layer with a titanium white base is applied in the same fashion, then placed in a drying room for 3 days to air dry naturally. Double primed canvases undergo the same process again, as do additional primings. After the final coating is applied, the canvas is moved back to the drying room for 10 days.
