Seals and stabilizes your surface prior to painting, also adds tooth for good adhesion!

Because a high quality painting begins with a high quality base, start your painting right with Artists' Acrylic Clear or White Gesso! Both offer excellent tooth for great paint adhesion, are fast drying and have a balanced absorbency. The White Gesso has a very high level of pigmentation for maximum opacity and covering power, meaning that 1 to 2 coats on unprimed canvas is all you need. The Clear Gesso is exactly that: clear, not milky like some other "clear" gessoes. It can be tinted with acrylics to add some color to your primer, or used alone to allow the qualities of your canvas or board to show through. It also makes a great ground for pastels or charcoal. Both non-yellowing, flexible gessoes are perfect primers for all your acrylic, oil and alkyd paintings!

  • Clear Gesso - With all the tooth, absorbency, and fast-drying properties you need in a gesso, only completely clear! Not milky like some other "clear" gessoes, the unpigmented Artists' Acrylic resin base dries absolutely transparent; allowing you to either tint it with acrylics for a colored primer, or to use it alone and permit the qualities of your canvas or painting surface to show through. Perfect for acrylics, oils and alkyds, it also makes an excellent ground for charcoals or pastels.
  • White Gesso - With superior quality Artists' Acrylic resin base and a high level of pigmentation, this non-yellowing gesso gives the maximum of coverage in as little as one coat! (Though 2 coats are recommended for oil paintings) Fast-drying, flexible, and with a balanced absorbency, this gesso provides the perfect level of tooth to ensure good adhesion of your paint. Use it straight from the pot (dilution is not recommended) to provide a sealed and stabilized surface for all your acrylic, oil and alkyd paintings!

Winsor & Newton Artists Acrylic Gesso Primers is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good coverage with one coat. Winsor and Newton are the brand I go out of my way to purchase. This gesso is a great product, covers my canvas in one coat usually, unless I'm covering a dark color.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Quality Not many companies make clear gesso. Have used liguidtex most often and this less often. They about equal. Negative for the Windsor is the container. It is a plastic jar. Don't waste as much with the liguidtex because of squeeze cap dispenser. Quality of this Windsor product is good though and have no regrets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great on unprimed linen. I use it on on unprimed linen and the linen shows very little shift in color once the clear gesso is applied and has dried. On unprimed linen first coat is Winsor and Newton Clear Gesso then two coats of Golden's GAC100 then one coat of Winsor and Newton Clear Gesso. The color of the linen stays fairly natural. I use the clear gesso priming to preserve the natural linen color instead of using a pigment to tone the background as the starting point of my paintings. I paint using oils but it would also work for Acrylics since the Clear Gesso is an acrylic product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from solid customer service Thanks. This is good stuff! I use it all the time. Sometimes I like it thin. Sometimes I like it thick. Sometimes I like it any way I paint it, even pour it on. But thanks to Jerry's fine customer service the leaking gesso jar in shipment was replaced asap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great gesso I bought this as a little birthday gift to myself and I can say that it is great quality. I love the use it on my aluminum panels. Its to use if you want you painting to retain some of canvas/wood/aluminum texture. The tooth on the gesso is also nice.

Hi! 3 questions for you: does the Winsor and Newton clear gesso go on a hard plastic surface? if yes, if the plastic surface is smooth, does it need to be sanded before applying it? do you recommend a brush, a sponge to apply it so not streak will show?

Asked by: Isabelle
Thank you for contacting us. Yes, you can prime plastic. If you don't sand and prime the plastic first, the acrylic paint will peel off easily. sand with 180 or 220 grit, prime, and paint. You will not be able to apply it without some type of brush stroke or sponge texture. You might try using a foam brush which would have less texture. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
