Sennelier Extra Soft Pastels

In 1887, a huge supporter of the arts named Gustave Sennelier opened his artist’s supply store “Maison Sennelier” directly across from the Louvre in Paris, France. Sennelier was a talented chemist by trade, but through his love of art had a sharply honed eye for value and color. His extensive background researching and studying pigment origins led him to create his own personal pigment mixtures to sell directly to his customers (initially he sold his paints through existing manufacturers). His friendships with prominent artists of the day (whether already famous or yet undiscovered) and his fierce loyalty to them and their craft resulted in creating multiple mediums designed specifically for them.

At the turn of the 20th century, Gustave dedicated three years of development to create an extra soft pastel for his friend and patron, artist Edgar Degas. His goal was to create a stick with the highest amount of pigment possible, adding only the transparent binder of gum arabic (a watercolor binder) and mineral fines to change the gradients of the colors (increasing amounts as the pastel stick lightens towards white). The use of the gum arabic creates a soft pastel that can also be wetted once on the substrate, and spread like a watercolor. With a total of 525 colors and the largest chromatic range offered in soft pastels, their vibrancy and brightness can attributed to not containing clays, like other brands. Pastel artists everywhere revere Sennelier especially for their mellow and deep dark tones compared to other makers, likely due to their higher pigment concentration with little filler.

The cylindrical pastel mold used by Sennelier in the manufacturing process does not compress the pastel paste, instead merely forming the uniform shape (which now features a larger diameter stick than before for added strength, while maintaining the soft nature of the pastel). Sticks are dried naturally in the open air for 4 weeks for a uniform softness throughout the pastel.

Using Sennelier Soft Pastels utilizes a deep and rich history of color, backed up by one of the most dedicated craftsman to color in history. Artists who relied on his and his son Gustave’s expertise and experience achieved fame through their artworks, like Paul Gaugin, Modigliani, Monet, Cezanne, Degas, Picasso, Chagall, Salvador Dali, and so many more. Give yourself the treat designed for the pastel master Degas himself, and choose Sennelier for the finest quality soft pastels available!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My experience with Sennelier soft pastels portrait Artist Cat Culpepper I have used this product for at least 15 years, I used them first with my class of students when I taught beginning art, I could get a nice box for an affordable price and just included that with their fee. I love to use them with my rembrants which are just a bit harder and the softer sennelier just adds a richer color.I have been doing portrait for over 30 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sennelier iridescent pastels I am very happy with my purchase. Exactly what I expected. I have been buying art supplies from Jerrys Artarama for a good few years now, and have never had any reason to complain. My latest purchase, the Sennelier iridescent soft pastels, are perfect for what I am painting with regular soft pastels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from sennelier Pastel Sennelier provides my base pastels and I build from there with Terry Ludwig, Unison, Shmincke and nu pastel. The labeling system is easy to use and since now the company is putting the numbers on both sides it is even easier when it comes time to replace a stick. For the cost, I find them to be the best value. My only complaint with Sennelier is color inconsistency. And when i contacted the company regarding this they blew me off. Needless to say i came close to not using their products again howeer, too many of their colors and those color's consistencies are not found in any other line... oh well!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sennelier Soft Pastels Seeing that Sennelier pastels were on sale, I wanted to try a new soft pastel brand. My Rembrandt pastels worked well, except for the occasional hard, crumbly stick. Senneliers are rich, buttery, and go down smoothly. I tend to use them for the more detailed work on pastel paintings, as they disappear more quickly than my Rembrandts. Only complaint, all pastels break easily, but when dropped the Senneliers tend to break into tiny pieces. Hold on to your pastels!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my Senneliers Love my Senneliers! I bought the 140 set of half-sticks a while back and recently purchased a few full sticks to take the place of a few that ran out. These are top-of-the-line soft pastels, glide on smooth and luscious colors, especially the darks. Some colors are grittier than others due to the pigments used, that's normal for pastels. Senneliers are top of the line, doesn't get any better than this.
