Varnishing your finished oil paintings is a vital final step in the creative process! Varnishes protect your artwork from atmospheric acids, dust and decay, as well as unifying the overall sheen of the finished piece into a cohesive whole. All final varnishes should only be applied to paintings that are completely dry: in the case of oil paints, this means allowing at least 6 months to a year for the paint to oxidize before applying a varnish. The finest varnishes are also reversible, meaning they can be carefully removed with solvents for restoration purposes, without damaging the paint film below.
