These wax-based paints are available in a huge array of powerful colors with unique properties to extend your talents to new avenues!
In the basic encaustic method, the paint is applied with a brush or spatula or poured or dripped onto the support. Other techniques that are great for encaustics are collage, relief and modeling, casting and carving, and armatures. The options are boundless!
R&F Encaustics are made here in the USA with traditional milling machines through a very controlled and slow process. There are no additives and dryers in these paints so the color is strong and brilliant allowing the individual characteristics of each pigment to come shining through. Only the best pigments and materials go into R&F products making these encaustics the very best you can get. All are made from an exclusive blend of pure pigment and beeswax and damar resin.
To get started, melt your colors on a heating plate and apply them they dry instantly. You can add layer upon layer easily and quickly. Heat tools allow you to manipulate your art after it is applied to the board. Build up enough encaustics and you can carve your designs as well. Encaustics are a great binder and you can embed virtually anything for 3-D effects, apply delicate, thin glazes or thick impastos. Leave the surface rough and matte or work it to a semi-gloss or high-gloss enamel like finish. Encaustics is an experience you should not miss. Encaustics do not require harsh solvents and they dry to an impervious finish. We strongly recommend that you work on Ampersand Hardboard, Panelli Panels or any multi-directional wood board surface.
