In 1955, Permanent Pigments, a manufacturer which was established in 1933 in Cincinnati, Ohio, launched a new product. Although they primarily made oil colors, this new artists’ color contained an acrylic polymer resin that was emulsified with water. The new color could go from thick to thin and could adhere to anything—from canvas to paper to metal to wood to plastic—and it dried quickly for easy re-working, layering, and masking. Most importantly, it could be thinned and cleaned up with water. Henry Levison, the visionary behind this new product, tried to come up with a name that captured the essence of the paint and its properties. The color was called liquid texture. Or Liquitex.
Liquitex colors and mediums are a complete system for work on virtually all porous surfaces. With an unlimited range of specialty effects—from thick sculptural applications to thin permanent watercolors and everything in between, the possibilities are endless.
