First Plein Air of 2010 by Wilson Bickford

  It has been "unseasonably" warm here in northern New York the past several days. Temperatures have been in the 60's, which is practically unheard of for March. The forecast says we can plan on this break not lasting and we'll be back to reality next week.Yesterday was a beautiful day, so I hauled out my travel easel and paints and headed out for something scenic to paint.Pictured here is the result of my little field trip. As an art instructor, I often hear the lament of students stating that, "I don't have a style," or "My work doesn't look like ME." Though we've all heard it before, the old saying, Don't worry about finding your style, your style will find YOU, is very true. In the beginning, most aspiring painters learn by copying. Let's face it,....... there's not one of us who can plead innocence on this. And that's okay. We learn by doing and by seeing what other artists do to create their unique effects.   I'm very often asked, "How do you get the inspiration or ideas for all of your paintings?"The truth is that I'm not really sure. Inspiration is one of those things that you don't always see coming and can be triggered by just about anything.Every artist has subjects which are of particular interest and appeal.For Monet, it was his water lilies.
