WINTER STREAM Project Lesson in Oils by Wilson Bickford

I thought I'd share some insights as to my thought processes and techniques with this painting. This was created just recently and I took step-by-step photos along the way to highlight certain points. Although this is considered an Oil painting, I did start with some Acrylic gessos for the underpainting; a blue-gray for the snow and black for the stream. The idea is to let the underpainting show through to influence the top layer of Oil Colors. Confessions of a Non-Artist

  Scared, frightened, afraid are just a few of many words that describe my first trip to an art museum. Me, being a non-artist, couldn't help but to feel out of place. My interpretation of art is total different from someone that is familiar with the arts. For a piece of work I would call pretty, an artist might call it engaging. For what I might call disturbing, an artist would call it intriguing. For a piece of work I might feel I could do, an artist might call it a "Pollock." Sunset Paintings by Wilson Bickford

 love to paint sunsets! I could paint nothing BUT sunsets and never be bored with it. It's the strong value contrasts of the light and silhouetted darks that really grab me! "FIRE IN THE SKY" is on a 12" x 16" panel and was painted wet-in-wet using Jerry's own SOHO Oils. I like the interplay of that little touch of cool Blue against all the warm Reds and Yellows. Repeating those hues in the water ties the whole painting idea together.
